interpore news

Dear InterPore colleagues,

While the world was finally catching some breath after two years of struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic, we are now struck by the unfolding humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine, caused by the atrocities of an unprovoked war, initiated by the Russian regime. Please find the InterPore position on the war in Ukraine. I want to reiterate that our Ukrainian colleagues are in our minds and thoughts and that we will try to support them wherever we can in the difficult times ahead.

Fortunately, unlike the Russian regime, most of the world keeps its senses… and keeps working, and some results can be found in today’s Newsletter. We’ve got a couple of awards announced (congratulations!), an update on InterPore2022 (don’t forget to register!), courses announced and webinars reviewed, a whole list of job postings, from PhD to tenure track, and more!

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

InterPore2022 Registration Deadline for Presenters is coming up!

In order to maintain your scheduled slot, oral presenters must register no later than 31 March. Poster presenters must register no later than 30 April.

Conference registration

Early bird rates are available until 31 March 2022.

In case events beyond your control prevent you from traveling to Abu Dhabi, you may change your InterPore2022 registration for in-person participation to online participation. Changes to the registration may be made by notifying InterPore at secretary@interpore.org at the earliest opportunity. The conference organizers reserve the right to refund the difference in registration fee paid minus a €20 administration fee plus any bank transfer fee incurred for changes made by Saturday, 30 April 2022. After 30 April, the difference in registration fee will not be refunded.

Instructions for presenters

There can be a little bit more to it when presenting at a conference in 2022. Whether you’re attending in-person or online, the audience is attending in-person and online and InterPore2022 asks to pre-record the lectures as well. Luckily, clear presenter instructions have been written and published.

  • Oral presenters, please find the instructions here.

  • Poster presenters, please find the instructions here.

Separations and Filtration Flyer

InterPore2022 already consists of 23 minisymposia, each with their own topic. Moreover, many important topics, and in particular applications, are spread out across multiple minisymposia. For example, separation and filtration can be studied both experimentally and computationally in various ways. Hence, separation and filtration is a topic at InterPore2022, even though it is less noticeable from a quick glance through the program.

In order to help you invite your colleagues, we’ve made a flyer (pdf 1,9 MB). Please download the flyer and distribute it across your network!

InterPore2022 sponsors

InterPore is proud to announce the Bronze Sponsorship of Shell at InterPore2022! Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies that aims to meet the world’s growing need for more and cleaner energy solutions in ways that are economically, environmentally and socially responsible.

The global energy system is changing. A planet destined for more people and rising living standards will need more energy. But the world must also find ways to reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change. Shell’s New Energies business focuses on new fuels and power.

Hydrogen has the potential to decarbonise different sectors. Shell is building on its leading position in hydrogen by developing integrated hydrogen hubs to serve industry and heavy-duty transport.

CS3 webinar report

On 8 March 2022, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Politecnico di Milano (Polimi) organized the CS3 webinar Underground space: from resources to structures and infrastructures. Polimi is an Institutional Member of InterPore, and the event was set in the context of the InterPore Italian Chapter as well as the InterPore Academy. The webinar was well attended and the two featured speakers, Prof. Antonio Gens and Prof. Xavier Sanchez-Vila from UPC BarcelonaTech (Spain), shared their views on key aspects of tunneling in an urban context and groundwater resources at risk in the presence of changing scenarios. Polimi PhD candidates Laura Ceresa and Rafael Leonardo Sandoval were each awarded the Young Researcher Prize of the Department for their outstanding poster contributions.

Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lectureship Award

Following the proposal from the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lectureship Award Committee, InterPore Foundation is pleased to announce that the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer 2023 will be:

Professor Adrian Bejan

J.A. Jones Distinguished Professor at Duke University
Durham, North Carolina, USA

Prof. Bejan’s contributions to porous media research and beyond are well known: convection in porous media, constructal law, evolutionary design everywhere in nature, bio and non-bio… He is the author of 30 books and 700 peer-refereed journal articles. InterPore is greatly honoured to have such an outstanding lecturer.

His lecture, entitled “Vascular Materials: Predicting Design Evolution”, will focus on one of his major contributions: evolutionary design illustrated in the case of multiscale vasculature, a methodology that can be used generally to predict the evolution toward flow access, miniaturization, high density of heat transfer, and the scaling up (or down) of an existing design.

InterPore Meritorious Service Medal

Professor Azita Ahmadi-Senichault has been awarded InterPore Meritorious Service Medal. The InterPore Meritorious Service Medal recognizes individuals for exceptional, prolonged, impactful, and meaningful services to the Society.

Professor Azita Ahmadi-Senichault

École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers
Bordeaux, France

Azita Ahmadi-Senichault is a University Professor at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers, Bordeaux, France. She has been involved in the establishment and development of InterPore from the beginning. She actively participated in the founding meeting of InterPore held in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on 09 April 2008, and has played a crucial role in shaping the InterPore Society since then. Together with Dr. Didier Lasseux, she organized the third InterPore Annual Meeting in 2011 in Bordeaux. That was a very successful meeting with around 200 participants and, for the first time, we had parallel sessions. She has been co-organizing and chairing many sessions during InterPore Conferences. Most importantly, she agreed to be the treasurer of InterPore in 2011. This has been a very demanding (both time and attention) task that she has carried out in an exemplary fashion. As the treasurer, she became a member of InterPore Executive Committee and the Council in 2011. This has been additional burden on her busy schedule. In 2017, when InterPore Foundation was established, she agreed to be the treasurer of Foundation, too, and thus she has been a member of Board of Directors of the Foundation.

It is clear that the time and efforts invested by Prof. Ahmadi in InterPore have been enormous and her dedication has been unparalleled. For her continual service and commitment to the advancement of the InterPore Society, Prof. Ahmadi is a most worthy recipient of the InterPore Meritorious Service Medal.

National Chapter Award goes to France

Every year, the InterPore National Chapter Award is given in recognition of the many activities organized by a chapter in recent years (in particular during the past one) and of its contribution to the make the InterPore society flourishing.

This year’s award goes to the France InterPore Chapter (FIC).

The winning chapter is selected by the National Chapter Committee (NCC) during the first trimester of each year, on the basis of activities reported in the annual reports of chapters.

The evaluation for the award attribution is based on the following points:

  • Organization of recommended and suggested activities, indicated in the “Guidelines for creation and management of InterPore National Chapters”

  • Additional national activities not listed in the guidelines.

  • Participation of Chapter members in various activities of InterPore Society.

Congratulations to our friends in France on their good work!

Thus, CMWR conferences have a strong focus on processes occurring in porous media.

The abstract submission will remain open till 31 March 2022.

For more information, please visit the website or contact CMWR by email.
