Summary WEBINAR CS3

“Underground space: from resources to structures and infrastructures”

Polimi is an Institutional Member of InterPore and the event, which is part of the successful series of events CS3@dica, was framed in the context of the InterPore Italian Chapter as well as the InterPore Academy.

Over 40 people took part to the event in person, whereas about 30 people were connected on-line. Researchers of the Department provided a spotlight of their recent activities aimed at planning and designing underground structures and infrastructure systems. These were set in the context of a sustainability-driven approach geared towards sustainable management and protection of subsurface resources. Key focus was given to groundwater and energy, including assessment of flow and transport of contaminants of emerging concern and pathogens across aquifer systems in the presence of various sources of uncertainty.

The webinar featured two internationally renowned guest speakers from the UPC BarcelonaTech: Prof. Antonio Gens and Prof. Xavier Sanchez-Vila. Their lectures focused on aspects of tunneling in an urban context and groundwater resources at risk in the presence of future scenarios, respectively.

During the event, PhD candidates (Laura Ceresa and Rafael Leonardo Sandoval) were awarded the Young Researcher Prize of the Department for their outstanding poster contributions. These were focused on transport mechanisms of antibiotics in aquifer systems (poster by Laura Ceresa) and probabilistic risk assessment and impact on groundwater following hydraulic fracturing operations (poster by Leonardo Sandoval).
