Monday, 13 May from 19:00

InterPore and the Local Organizing Committee welcome all in-person participants to the Gala Dinner. What better way to experience Qingdao’s cuisine and enjoy the company of your fellow conference participants?

The seated dinner will be held in China Hall at the Shangri-La Hotel, and beverages are also included.

This event is included in the in-person conference registration fees.

Do you have a guest with you? If you haven’t purchased a separate ticket for your accompanying guest at the time of your registration, you can do so at the conference check-in.

And now…Qingdao!

InterPore2024 will be in Qingdao. Described as a city of “red tiles, green trees, blue sky, and blue sea.” Qingdao has a lot of things to offer with respect to science, science history and porous media. This week: Laoshan Oldenlandia water

Laoshan Oldenlandia water was meticulously developed by Qingdao Laoshan Mineral Water Co., Ltd. in the early 1960s to meet the health needs of domestic consumers. It is an alkaline beverage with a taste that effectively relieves alcoholism, protects the liver, nourishes the stomach, detoxifies, and clears heat, making it a precious gem among health drinks. From the LOC: “I strongly recommend that you give it a try when you come to Qingdao. People have varying opinions on its unique taste, but it is indeed beneficial for health.

Quickly obtain porosity insights from your imaging data

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, we strive to provide innovative analytical solutions. For over 20 years, the Thermo Scientific™ Avizo™ Software and Thermo Scientific™ PerGeos™ Software have evolved closely with the scientific community. They provide a reliable, fully automatable, customizable, and easy-to-use software solution so you can innovate faster.

Our software are all-in-one digital labs that allow for the visualization, processing, and quantification of porous materials. Our analytical software enables the detection and classification of various types of porosity, even on images with complex artifacts. Many porosity properties and statistics can be calculated, such as volume fraction, largest ball fitting through a given pore, pore size distribution, pore throat size distribution, pore orientation, shape factor, and other porosity properties. Porosity can be turned into a model, allowing for rapid understanding and exploration of the pore space that features spheres or ellipsoids-and-sticks type visualization with property mapping. Our software also allows the direct calculation of the absolute permeability of the material from the segmented pore space.

Exhibitor Spotlight: Brucker

Bruker AXS is a worldwide market leader in providing advanced X-ray systems and complete solutions for structure and elemental analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction (SCD) and 3D X-ray Microscopy (XRM). Our products fit the analytical requirements of customers in materials research, life science and process analysis. They provide essential information about molecular structure, material and structural parameters of thin film and bulk material as well as elemental composition of solids and liquids.

Exhibitor Spotlight: Surface Measurement Systems

Surface Measurement Systems are pioneering advanced technology for evaluating porous materials and their use in carbon capture. With the groundbreaking DVS Carbon instrument, we enable researchers to precisely measure uptake of carbon dioxide in the presence of moisture in porous materials under a range of real-world conditions, paving the way for the creation of advanced material solutions for carbon capture.

Hear about our advanced sorption solutions in action at our talk:

Realistic evaluation of prototypical porous materials for carbon capture
Session: 2.2.MS01 | 14 May 2024 @ 12:00 pm

Be sure to visit our stand to speak with Meishan about this and many other applications made possible by our advanced line of gravimetric sorption instruments and Surface Energy Analyzers.

Preparing National Research Ecosystems for AI

The ISC Centre for Science Futures’ landmark report “Preparing National Research Ecosystems for AI“ offers a comprehensive analysis of the integration of artificial intelligence in science and research across various countries. The report, which features a number of ISC Members, serves as a critical source of first-hand information for science leaders, policy-makers and academics and makes an urgent call for continued discussion and collaboration between countries as they introduce AI in their research priorities.

Please feel free to share the report with your members, colleagues and networks. Readers are invited to comment and suggest additional countries for case studies to include in the follow-up edition of the paper coming out in late 2024.

Global Call for Science Missions for Sustainability

The International Science Council and its Global Commission on Science Missions for Sustainability proudly announce the launch of the Science Missions for Sustainability Global Call. Consortia are invited to submit pilot proposals to become part of the transformative collective action to shape the future of science and humanity.

Fingering Instability During Mixing-Driven Precipitation Flow

Negar Shahsavar, Xiaojing Fu, Benzhong Zhao

We investigate fluid–fluid displacement in a Hele–Shaw cell where two fluids react to form of a precipitate suspension. We observe interesting fingering patterns whose birth, growth and decay are strongly influenced by the injection rate. Additionally, the fingering instability has strong feedback on the mixing and the subsequent precipitation rate. Lastly, we find that, counter to intuition, a higher injection rate results in a larger amount of precipitates that are securely deposited.
