interpore news

Dear InterPore colleagues,

The other day, I was in a meeting where a colleague, an enthusiastic scientist, reported some of his findings and scientific plans to policy makers. He only showed one, maybe two equations, and discussed how the input parameters were experimentally obtained. At some point, the chair interrupted him, requesting for a quick conclusion without all the details.

I did – and probably occasionally still do – misjudge audiences. Still, equations are fun and easy anyway, aren’t they!? Luckily, amongst fellow InterPore colleagues, we can have slides with equations and derivations and graphs or figures to show what they mean. Agreed? In that case, InterPore2024, the Tea Time Talks, the KC Lecturer, the webinar, the course, other conferences, all chances to enjoy a great presentation (or present yourself).

And if you perform and present well, we may present you with an award at some point! Congratulations to the two award winners presented in today’s Newsletter!

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

Repository for Open Calls for Research Projects

InterPore wants to set up a repository for open calls for national and international research projects related to the understanding, description, and modeling of natural and industrial porous media systems.

Please send information on such open calls including details on main research topics, target countries, budget, and duration to Costanza Aricò.

The information received will be published on the InterPore website. Stay tuned for more details in the upcoming editions of the newsletter.

Call for inputs to the STI Forum 2024

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (ECOSOC) has issued a call for inputs to the 9th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for the Sustainable Development Goals to be held on 9 – 10 May 2024. This year’s call is not only for science-policy briefs on emerging science & technology and the science-policy interface, but also for case studies on national STI policy and the SDGs in-focus. Please submit your expressions of interest and abstracts to Roehrl and Freire by 16 February. More information

Launch of ISC Early and Mid-Career Researchers Newsletter

This past year, the ISC celebrated reaching important milestones towards elevating the voice of Early and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCR) in global science. Beyond opening the ISC membership to Young Academies and Associations (YAA), the ISC initiated the first YAA Forum, the joint ISC-Global Young Academy sessions and roundtables, among the multiple dedicated international initiatives dedicated to EMCR that the ISC has supported this year. More information

The ISC concluded 2023 with the publication of the first edition of the ISC EMCR Newsletter, which will be the communications and engagement tool dedicated to the wider EMCR community, ISC Members, including Young Academies and Associations. interpore awards

Congratulations to our award recipients!

Rien van Genuchten Early-Career Award of Porous Media for a Green World

Dr. Serveh Kamrava, is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, USA.

Dr. Kamrava has significantly advanced the application and development of machine learning in the study of fluid flow in porous materials. Her ground-breaking work employs a hybrid stochastic deep learning models to improve the resolution of X-ray images of heterogeneous shale samples. This work not only improves predictive modelling but also pioneers the enhancement of porous media image resolution.

She has developed machine learning algorithms that quickly estimate fluid flow properties like permeability and dispersion coefficients solely from a sample’s morphology. This leap in methodology provides a rapid, cost-effective alternative to traditional methods.

Beyond her technical prowess, Dr. Kamrava stands out as a highly motivated and energetic female scientist. She can serve as a beacon for young, enthusiastic researchers, particularly women aiming to venture into STEM fields.

InterPore and InterPore Foundation congratulate Serveh Kamrava on this honor and wish her continued success.

InterPore PoreLab Award for Young Researchers

Dr. Bauyrzhan K. Primkulov, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA

Dr. Primkulov is currently an Instructor of Applied Mathematics, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

While only having completed his PhD in the Spring of 2022, Bauyrzhan has already displayed a high level of scientific accomplishment and academic maturity and has already demonstrated the ability to bridge disciplines, from fluid dynamics and interfacial phenomena to geoscience and engineering.

Bauyrzhan is an outstanding young scientist and engineer with a very strong background in fluid mechanics, which he combines with an exceptional talent for laboratory experiments to make fundamental advances in our understanding of the physics of flow through complex, disordered media.

InterPore and InterPore Foundation congratulate Dr. Primkulov on this honor and wish him continued success.
