interpore news

Dear InterPore colleagues,

Best wishes for 2024!

Some of the wishes we wish may be unattainable. Fortunately, some others are much more within reach. For instance, if you wish to submit an abstract or a conference proposal to InterPore2024, you still can! There are other partner events where you can also submit abstracts. Or, if you wish to join an InterPore Chapter meeting, check out your local chapter for the next event.

Or, if you wish that more colleagues were able to join InterPore2024 from countries with economic challenges, please check out the InterPore Foundation item and help to fulfill a wish that is out of reach for someone else.

Also in 2024, our Newsletter is essentially a list of wishes!

Have a great 2024!

Conference proceedings

Unlike previous years, InterPore2024 will introduce conference proceedings. All accepted conference abstracts, whether presented in person or online, for oral or poster presentations, will be eligible for submitting a paper for inclusion in the proceedings. The conference proceedings will be published by an international publisher and will have an ISBN.

Please note that submitting the full paper for publication is optional and not mandatory. The deadline for submitting the full manuscript is 01 March 2024. Each manuscript should have a maximum length of four (4) pages. Further information, such as format requirements and email address to submit the manuscript, will be announced soon.

Invited speaker

In anticipation of InterPore2024, we’re introducing the invited speakers in today’s and forthcoming Newsletters and Bulletins. This week: Shuyu Sun

Shuyu Sun
KAUST, Saudi Arabia

Title: Property-Preserving Schemes for Porous Media Flow: Phase-Wise Conservation, Bound Preservation, and Energy Stability

Shuyu Sun is a founding Professor of Earth Science and Engineering at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST); he is also jointly affiliated with the Program of Applied Mathematics and Computational Science and the Program of Energy Resource and Petroleum Engineering at KAUST. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in computational and applied mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin in 2003.

One basic requirement for accurate modeling and simulation of multiphase flow is to have the predicted physical quantities sit within a physically meaningful range. For example, the predicated saturation should sit between 0 and 1 while the predicated molar concentration should sit between 0 and the maximum value allowed by the equation of state. In this talk we present our work on both fully implicit and semi-implicit algorithms for two-phase and multi-phase flow in porous media with capillary pressure. Our proposed algorithms are locally mass conservative for all phases. They are able to accurately reproduce the discontinuity of saturation due to different capillary pressure functions, and they enjoy the merit that the total velocity is continuous in the normal direction. Moreover, the new schemes are… continue reading

Reduced Visa Fees

China has fully reopened its borders, promising recovery of international tourism and travel. Many of the visa-free travel policies that were in place prior to the pandemic have therefore come back into effect, enabling people from a wide range of countries to visit China on a short-term basis. In this article, we provide an overview of all of the China visa-free travel policies currently available and explain who is eligible to enjoy them.

On 8 December 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released the Notice on a Temporary Reduction of China Visa Fees. According to this notice, during the period from 11 December 2023 to 31 December 2024, China shall cut visa fees by 25% across the board for foreign travelers.

For more details, please consult with your local Chinese embassy or consulate.

Donate to InterPore Foundation and start the New Year off right!

Each year, InterPore Foundation provides grants for scientists and students from countries with economic difficulties.

These grants can help change a young scientist’s destiny by boosting their professional career and helping them to build their network at the international level.

Listen to what this meant to some of our InterPore2023 Conference Grant Recipients:

I am grateful to receive the InterPore2023 conference grant, as a turning point in my research on the subject of industrial decarbonization. It was a great motivation and built a confidence anchor for me and my team to initiate more projects on this subject throughout the year, lead students of different disciplines to perform integrated research on the subject and conduct academic workshops. According to my personal experience, the InterPore event is not only a conference, it is a multi-disciplinary and diverse platform for experts and scientists in porous media to be heard and collaborate.

Attending InterPore2023 in Edinburgh was a transformative experience, made possible by the generous grant I received. Presenting my work among experts in porous media was invaluable, providing insights into cutting-edge research and fostering connections The interdisciplinary nature of the conference broadened my perspective, and the informal networking events facilitated cultural exchange. Grateful for this opportunity, I look forward to applying the knowledge gained to contribute to the advancement of porous media research.

Together, let’s make someone’s New Year’s wish come true!

Call for Contributions: The WikiPore Software Catalogue

Using and developing software is an integral part of most scientists’ daily work and porous media research is no exception here. We employ and write software for pretty much everything ranging from digitizing a real porous sample to evaluating the results of simulating the flow through it. But what software is out there to accomplish the individual tasks in our research workflows? The WikiPore Software Catalogue is here for helping you find the right software packages for any research question related to porous media.

Since the announcement of the new WikiPore in July 2021, the InterPore team has worked hard on optimizing the catalogue part. It has been freshly equipped with a few entries and is hopefully ready for production. We rely on you, the InterPore community, to make the catalogue a success and useful for our researchers. We heartily invite you to pick your favorite software packages dedicated to porous-media research and upload contributions to the catalogue: Please login to MY INTERPORE and click on Submit WikiPore Software to add a new entry.

We welcome all contributions of software packages focusing explicitly on porous-media applications, not necessarily general-purpose packages like word processing products. Please don’t hesitate to submit suggestions for improvement to Bernd Flemisch.

Prior to the year 2023 officially coming to an end, the International Science Council (ISC) and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) released a joint statement on “Protecting the Autonomy of National Academies of Science”.

Within this statement, they “express concern about the autonomy of academies and their members, jeopardizing their capacity to provide valid, ethically sound advice on critical issues affecting humanity and the planet”.

As a member organization to the ISC, we would also like to further distribute this statement, which can be read here.
