interpore news

Dear InterPore colleagues,
Two or three years ago, we had a performance event scheduled during the online InterPore meeting (remember the miraculous long-distance card tricks by the most famous Spanish magician?). Last week, I was in Stuttgart, Germany, for a meeting. We noticed a piano in the conference venue, so, after a beer, we decided to compose a three-chord song. Illustrating the nerdiness, we had chatGPT writing the lyrics for us! All those who came close, ‘volunteered’ to be in the choir and the next day, we performed the song after the last scientific talk.

Who knows what improvised creativity we’ll find at InterPore2023 (I am just saying..), in addition to all the well-prepared lectures and posters (program with abstract is online)!

And we have award-winning chapters, summer schools, new positions, KC Lecturer 2023 (last chance) and more…!

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

In-Person Poster Presentations at InterPore2023

Please note the guidelines below for In-Person Poster Presentations.

  • Each poster presenter will be assigned to one of the poster sessions during the conference.
  • Session assignments can be found by navigating to the “My Conference” section of this website and clicking on the abstract link.
  • Posters should be put up in the morning and will remain on display the entire day.
  • Presenters of posters should be at their posters during their scheduled poster presentation session. Those who have requested to be considered for the best poster award must be present at their poster during the scheduled poster presentation session and be available for the live Q&A.
  • All poster presenters will have the option to upload a digital poster and pre-recorded video for participants who are unable to attend the live presentation.
  • Attendees and presenters can also use the chat feature in the conference platform, Whova, to discuss presentations at any time.

More information on In-Person Poster Presentations, including guidelines and instructions, can be found on our website.

Energy Transition panel

During InterPore2023, in addition to many presentations in regular minisymposia that would address various aspects of energy transition, a special event will be organized on Thursday, 25 May. First, a plenary lecture will be given by Onno van Kessel (General Manager, CCS Development & Subsurface at Shell), entitled Energy Transition and Porous Media: an Industrial Megaproject Perspective. Then, a panel of experts will engage in a 1-hour discussion with the participants regarding the current urgent research needs in various energy transition technologies and methodologies.

InterPore2023 attendees can ask their questions in the Q&A section of the session on Whova (the online conference platform) prior to the conference, during the plenary lecture of Onno van Kessel and during the forum. During the discussion the session chair, Ann Muggeridge (Professor, Chair in Subsurface Physics at Imperial College) will direct the questions/comments to the appropriate panel members.

Chair of Lecture & Panel: Ann Muggeridge, Imperial College
Panelists:

  • Onno van Kessel, Shell
  • Aimy Bazylak, University of Toronto
  • Michelle Bentham, British Geological Survey
  • Martin Blunt, Imperial College
  • Lynn Orr, Stanford University

A white paper on the current urgent research needs in various energy transition technologies and methodologies will be prepared after the conference, with input from all panel members.

Join us at InterPore2023 in Edinburgh for the latest on Energy Transition!

Walk to Arthur’s seat

Edinburgh is often said to have been built on seven hills, in an allusion to Rome, although it’s not hard to come up with a few more if you know the city well. The highest of them all is known as Arthur’s Seat, an ancient volcano that erupted 350 million years ago. Although it is sometimes said that its name derived from the legend of King Arthur, it is more likely coming from the Gaelic Àrd-na-Said, meaning height of arrows. Arthur’s Seat towers over the Palace of Holyrood and Edinburgh’s Old Town, offering a spectacular vantage point over the whole city as well as the Three Bridges and the Firth of Forth.

Join us on Wednesday 24th of May for our walk to the summit of Arthur’s Seat. It’s a short, slightly strenuous hike to the highest point (251 m). We recommend sturdy footwear and outfits appropriate for the four seasons, as they are often experienced in a single day in Edinburgh. Due to the potential for high winds, an umbrella is not advised. The walk to the top is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. The return to Old Town Edinburgh is approximately 30 minutes. This event is free and open to all attendees. Visit the conference website for more information.

Webinar: Underground H2 storage – enabling a H2 economy at scale

Tuesday, 25 April, 4 pm CEST

Speaker: Dr. Karin de Borst, Shell Global Solutions International B.V.
Duration: 1 hour
Date/Time: 25 April 2023 at 4 pm CEST

Abstract: Hydrogen is considered a key enabler of a net-zero emission energy system. It provides a balance between energy supply and demand over possibly long distances and periods of time and, thus, allows the introduction of a higher share of renewable energy sources in the overall energy mix. Offering a balancing mechanism to the energy system will require a large-scale storage of hydrogen, which can be most cost-effectively realized in the subsurface using mined salt caverns, depleted reservoirs, or aquifers. This webinar will provide an introduction to H2 subsurface storage technologies and highlight the critical role of the geosciences and petroleum engineering in their de-risking and further development. It will address performance characteristics, remaining challenges, suitable geological resources, and ongoing piloting activities and commercial-scale developments.

interpore awards

InterPore National Chapter Award

Every year, the InterPore National Chapter Award is given in recognition of the many activities organized by a chapter in recent years (in particular during the past one) and of its contribution to the make the InterPore society flourishing.

This year’s award goes jointly to the Benelux and Norway chapters.

The National Chapter Committee (NCC) selects the winning chapter during the first trimester of each year on the basis of activities reported in the annual reports of chapters.

The evaluation for the award attribution is based on the following points:

  • the organization of the chapter with a well-structured committee,
  • the organization of a meeting every two years (Benelux) or an annual workshop (Norway) with substantial participation,
  • their involvement in the interactions with InterPore,
  • their communication among the community in their country and internationally,
  • their participation in a network with a regional chapter workshop planned during fall 2024 (together with France and Germany).

Congratulations to our friends in the Benelux and Norway on their good work!
