interpore news

Dear InterPore colleagues,

When reading through the items of this week’s newsletter, I suddenly noticed a very exciting development within InterPore. I guess we will hear a lot more about it, hopefully soon. For now, I’ll just let you read on to figure out what I mean.

OK, here’s a hint: It is not in the InJournals section (although you will find an interesting review paper there) nor the list job opportunities (well, unless you’re looking for a professor position in France, for example). Also nice are the webinar and PMTTT call and info about the Kimberly-Clark Lecturer, but that is not what I mean. And you won’t find it in the InterPore2023-related items nor in the partner event. I suppose you’ll just need to read the newsletter to find it yourself. Good luck on the hunt!

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter
Editor-in-Chief

Minisymposia

MS17 Thermal processes (including fluid-solid-thermal coupled ones) in porous media play an important role in numerous applications, including unconventional energy resources, environments, industrial materials such as isolators, aerospace and medical engineering. At the same time, it is of great importance to obtain thermal properties of porous media (e.g. conductivity) and the fluids at different scales, including micro- and macro-scales. The scope of this minisymposium covers all studies which deal primarily on thermal aspects of porous media, thermal coupling, and property measurements in a multidisciplinary nature of analyses, modeling, experiment and field studies. We also include… read more

MS19 Wave propagation, electron transport and electrolyte flow through porous media are found in many fields of science and technology, ranging from petroleum, chemical and construction engineering, to cell, earth and materials sciences. Thus, it is of great significance to understand elastic, electrical and electrochemical processes and properties in porous media. In this minisymposium, attention is devoted to new developments in characterization methods and modeling techniques addressing state-of-the-art challenges in elasticity, electrical engineering and electrochemistry in porous media. Research includes… read more

Did you know….Edinburgh?

InterPore2023 will be in Edinburgh. Edinburgh has a lot of things to offer with respect to science, science history and porous media. This week: the Royal Yacht Britannia.

As the conference is drawing nearer and you are preparing your trip, remember Edinburgh is home to the Royal Yacht Britannia. The three-mast, 412-foot-long yacht was the British Monarchy’s vessel, from 1953 when she was launched by Queen Elizabeth II, until her decommission in 1997. During her 43-year career, she conveyed Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and other members of the Royal family on more than 900 visits and travelled more than a million nautical miles around the world. It is said that the Queen shed a tear at the decommissioning ceremony that was attended by most of the senior members of the Royal Family.

Britannia is now a visitor attraction moored in the historic port of Leith in Edinburgh, explored by more than 300,000 people every year. The visit across her five decks will take you past the crew quarters and the Royal Apartments, while numerous rare items and photographs on display will give you an exclusive look into the lives of the Royal family and Royal Yachtsmen (Yotties) at sea. A must on your to-do list when you come visit Edinburgh in May.

New member at the InterPore office

Hello to all! I am the newest member of the InterPore Executive Team, having officially started on 23 March. My full name is Laura Lynn Lenz, but I always go by Laura.

I was born in Berwyn, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago, which is considered part of the Midwest in the USA. I spent the first part of my years in Berwyn, then my parents and I moved to Geneva, Illinois, which was much safer and where none of our visitors or ourselves would get chased down the street by one of our neighbours’ not-so-friendly dogs. I obtained my BBA in Accounting and Marketing with a specialisation in International Business at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and later my MSc in International Economics and Business at the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden. I have worked in various project management and marketing roles in Chicago, Singapore, England and Germany, which has also been my home since September 2007. I left industry and started working in publishing back in 2009, first for Schattauer Publishers where I was Managing Editor for a veterinary journal and Advertising Manager for the English-language journals, and later for the Thieme Group as Advertising Manager for several English journals.

When I am not working, I am most likely busy with my 5-year-old son, either playing at home or at the playground, creating something with his Lego’s, or on some new adventure! In my free time, I enjoy baking, cooking, reading, eating chocolate and cheese (though not necessarily together), and taking walks through the countryside or woods nearby. I also love to explore new places, try new things and meet new people.

I am very excited about my new role at InterPore, where I will be responsible for launching and managing the Society’s very own scientific journal. So should you have any questions or even suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me at Laura.Lenz@Interpore.org. Additionally, I look very much forward to getting to know everyone and to receiving your future manuscript submissions!

Webinar: Underground H2 storage – enabling a H2 economy at scale

Tuesday, 25 April, 4 pm CEST

Speaker: Dr. Karin de Borst, Shell Global Solutions International B.V.
Duration: 1 hour
Date/Time: 25 April 2023 at 4 pm CEST

Abstract: Hydrogen is considered a key enabler of a net-zero emission energy system. It provides a balance between energy supply and demand over possibly long distances and periods of time and, thus, allows the introduction of a higher share of renewable energy sources in the overall energy mix. Offering a balancing mechanism to the energy system will require a large-scale storage of hydrogen, which can be most cost-effectively realized in the subsurface using mined salt caverns, depleted reservoirs, or aquifers. This webinar will provide an introduction to H2 subsurface storage technologies and highlight the critical role of the geosciences and petroleum engineering in their de-risking and further development. It will address performance characteristics, remaining challenges, suitable geological resources, and ongoing piloting activities and commercial-scale developments.

Pore-network modeling of flow in shale nanopores: Network structure, flow principles, and computational algorithms

Ronghao Cui, S Majid Hassanizadeh, Shuyu Sun

We presents a critical review of the state-of-the-art in pore-network modeling of single-phase and two-phase flow in shale nanopores. First, based on key geological features of shale rock, we analyze network topology, multiscale network, pore geometries, and network representativeness of shale pore-network models. Then, we discuss four important aspects that may influence flow principles of fluids in nanocapillaries: gas and liquid slippage, sorption and diffusion behavior, hydrocarbon thermodynamics, and the presence of water. Finally, we present pore-network modeling methods used for flow simulations in shale rock, including quasi-static and dynamic algorithms.
