In Memory of Prof. Mohamed Sassi

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our esteemed colleague Prof. Mohamed Sassi. Prof. Sassi had been a valued member of the InterPore Community for close to 10 years. He arranged for the institutional membership of Khalifa University and ensured active participation of his collaborators in InterPore conferences. In late 2021, when it became clear that plans for holding InterPore2022 in Qingdao could not be realized due to COVID-19 restrictions, he enthusiastically agreed to organize InterPore2022 at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi. With his management skills, dedication, and hard work, he led the conference to a great success.

Prof. Sassi obtained his Ph.D. and M.Sc. Degrees in Mechanical Engineering (Thermal Sciences and Combustion) from University of California, Berkeley, USA. He had a distinguished academic and industrial career in mechanical and chemical engineering, with over 30 years of multi-disciplinary experience involving worldwide collaborations in the United States, Europe, and Middle East & North Africa regions. He was an internationally known expert in thermofluids, combustion and technology development for clean energy and environmental protection applications. Recently, he led industry-funded research projects in the areas of digital rock physics, enhanced oil recovery and multiphase flow in porous media.

The InterPore Society extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Prof. Sassi and his colleagues at Khalifa University. Prof. Sassi will be dearly missed.

SAC Career Development Event

Join us at InterPore 2023‘s Career Development Event, where the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) will host a panel of established professionals sharing their personal and expert insights on navigating different career paths in the porous media science field. As a student or a Ph.D. candidate, deciding which career path to follow can be difficult after graduation. By attending this event, you will gain valuable guidance and perspectives on the accessible career options in this rapidly evolving era of energy transition and green shift. Discover the pros and cons of pursuing an academic career or exploring possibilities in industry or governmental agencies, and learn how to find satisfying and secure employment after graduation. Our speakers will share the critical choices they made along their career paths and offer their perspectives on the future of young porous media scientists.

This free event is open to all InterPore 2023 participants. Stay tuned for more updates from the SAC Career Events!

Information and instructions for online presentations

Minisymposia

MS15 Recent advances in computer and data sciences have made machine learning (ML) techniques a frontier in porous media-related research. As a result, classical challenges in porous media are being addressed with new techniques based on ML. The aim of this minisymposium is to present the recent results of new ML methods and introduce new directions in… read more

MS16 Thin porous media are extensively used in paper industry, fuel cell development, printing technologies, packaging, etc. In this minisymposium, we call for papers that focus on fluid transport through thin porous media considering evaporation, spreading, absorption, diffusion, capillary suction, clogging processes, while the media may deform due to swelling processes.

We also feature a sub-session on… read more

Special issue

We’re organizing a special issue on “Subsurface Flow Modeling for Energy Harvest and Carbon Storage” in the International Journal of Coal Science & Technology. The special issue is based on the minisymposium MS 06-A “Physics of multiphase flow in diverse porous media” on #InterPore2023, but not limited to participants thereof. As such, we invite high-quality submissions on related topics. More information can be found on our website and in this brochure

Chapter news

France InterPore Chapter Upcoming Meeting

The 16th edition of JEMP (Journées d’Etudes des Milieux Poreux) – the France InterPore Chapter conference on porous media – will be held at IFP Energie nouvelles, Rueil-Malmaison (near Paris) from 17 to 19 October 2023. The discussions, mostly interdisciplinary, involve fundamental topics such as applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and process engineering. The scientific research carried out in these domains is relevant in several major areas related to environmental and societal needs: energy storage, pollution abatement, renewable energies, agri-food and health.

Submit your abstracts until 30 June 2023 here.

Mexico InterPore Chapter Meeting Report

The ninth Annual Conference of Mexico InterPore Chapter was held in a hybrid manner on 2-3 March 2023 at the Fundación Hall of the UNAM Cultural Center in Querétaro. About 40 researchers and academics from throughout the nation attended. During the meeting, in-person attendees and remote participants gave lectures on a vast array of porous media-related research from various viewpoints.

This year, there was a Kimberly Clark Distinguished Lecture titled “Vascular Materials: Predicting Design Evolution” given by Professor Adrian Bejan.

Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer Award

New award winner for 2024: Ruben Juanes

Congratulations to Prof. Ruben Juanes as the recipient of the 2024 Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lectureship Award.

Prof. Ruben Juanes
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

Prof. Juanes is a Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. He has an outstanding track record of achievements and contributions to the field of porous media research, by his commitment to excellence in education and mentoring and by his exceptional skills as lecturer and communicator.

Ruben Juanes is a world-renowned expert in the field of multiphase flow in porous media. His research aims at advancing fundamental understanding and predictive capabilities of the simultaneous flow of two or more fluids through rocks, soils, and other porous materials. It combines theory, simulation, and experiments, to elucidate fundamental aspects of multiphase flow.

His contributions provide fundamental understanding of natural phenomena and have the potential to radically advance the deployment of energy systems, which depend critically on multiphase flow processes.

InterPore and InterPore Foundation congratulate Prof. Juanes on this honor and wish him continued success.

The Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer 2023 is Professor Adrian Bejan from Duke University, USA.

His lecture, entitled Vascular materials: Predicting Design Evolution, will focus on one of his major contributions: evolutionary design illustrated in the case of multiscale vasculature, a methodology that can be used generally to predict the evolution toward flow access, miniaturization, high density of heat transfer, and the scaling up (or down) of an existing design. ISC: UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the ISC’s distinguished lecture series

While we celebrate the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD), it is important to recognise the contribution basic science can make to the achieve sustainable development.

Within InterPore much of our efforts are focused on innovations in energy, the environment, and health. Our research clearly supports achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Last year in an ISC item, we encouraged you to familiarise yourself with the SDGs and to map your research against the 17 SDG goals set by the UN.

Building on this, we would like to draw your attention to a new distinguished lecture series by the ISC entitled: From fire to space – Basic sciences lead and shape our paths toward sustainable development.

We would like to invite you to read about this lecture series and register to attend any which you find interesting.

ISC Discussion Time:

Discuss the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with your team members. Summarise what you have learned from the ISC’s distinguished lecture series and share ideas with your team.

In ISC news items we propose topics for group discussions with your research team, either during a coffee break or in a dedicated session. InterPore is a member of ISC
