interpore news

Dear InterPore colleagues,

While steadily moving towards Christmas and New Years Eve, I hope everybody has an opportunity for a short, refreshing break. Whether you’re out on a beach or keeping warm indoors, it is a good time to bring some light to fellow man in need. Light-hearted, and after a nice gathering, perhaps somewhat light-headed too!

Meanwhile, InterPore continues updating you on the latest news that will interest you. A book on tortuosity may find its (indirect…) way to you…, or a publication on multiphase and multicomponent phase changes. Or what about the 52 PorousMediaTTT (and still counting). You can join that team. A relaxing video on Qingdao, a tenure track position or a MSc internship on moon topics… and more! Scroll down to discover!

And as this is the last regular Newsletter before 2024, on behalf of the Newsletter team, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Main criteria for selection of proposals include track record of the proposers as well as the opportunity to ensure diversity to a full extent across the set of courses.

To submit your proposal, please complete the following submission form before 15 January 2024.

Plenary speaker

In anticipation of InterPore2024, we’re introducing the plenary speakers in today’s and forthcoming Newsletters and Bulletins. This week: Changying Zhao

Changying Zhao
Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China

Title: Multiscale Considerations on Porous Media Heat Transfer

Prof. Changying Zhao is the Chair Professor, the Director of Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, and the Dean of China-UK Low Carbon College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Prof. Zhao’s research interests mainly cover micro/nano-scale thermal radiation and metamaterial energy devices, advanced energy storage and smart energy system, and phase change heat transfer in porous media.

Heat transfer in porous media is ubiquitous in many industrial applications, such as heat exchangers, heat pipes, heat storage system, and porous coatings for thermal radiation. Thus, it is of great importance to understand in depth the heat transfer in porous media. This, however, is still a huge challenge, mainly attributed to the following facts. First, heat transfer in porous media is a process involving multiple scales. The pores in porous media can be multiscaled, ranging from nano to millimeters; and the heat transfer in each pore of porous media controls the continuum- (macro) scale heat transfer in porous media. Second, heat transfer in porous media includes… continue reading

And now for Qingdao!

Qingdao has a lot of things to offer with respect to science, science history and porous media. When in need for a short break, have a look at this nice video from Qingdao.

Tortuosity and Microstructure Effects in Porous Media: Classical Theories, Empirical Data, and Modern Methods

Lorenz Holzer, Philip Marmet, Mathias Fingerle, Andreas Wiegmann, Matthias Neumann, Volker Schmidt

Empirical data shows that the tortuosity-value of a certain microstructure is more strongly dependent on the type of tortuosity than on the microstructure itself. To clarify the discussion on this topic, a new classification scheme and a systematic tortuosity-nomenclature are proposed. Three main classes of tortuosity are distinguished and thoroughly discussed: direct geometric, indirect physics-based and mixed tortuosities.

Book contents:

  • Review of theories and a new classification of tortuosity types
  • Tortuosity-porosity relationships: review of empirical data from literature
  • Image-based methodologies, workflows, and calculation approaches for tortuosity
  • Towards a quantitative understanding of microstructure-property relationships

Unified flash calculations with isenthalpic and isochoric constraints

V. Lipovac, O. Duran, E. Keilegavlen, F. A. Radu, I. Berre

Simulation of multiphase multicomponent flow with phase change demands great flexibility, efficiency, and compatibility of the thermodynamic subproblem. Complex phenomena in the subsurface require models for multiple properties of the fluid, including volume, enthalpy, or internal energy, in a thermodynamically consistent manner. This must be combined with a suitable mathematical approach for appearing and disappearing phases. The paper uses the unified formulation of the phase equilibrium problem with a persistent set of unknowns and extends the methodology to cover general equilibria states. This general, unified flash presents a modular way to include and couple the local fluid phase equilibrium with the flow and transport model.

InterPore Members can promote their publications to the community via the InterPore InJournals Section of the Newsletter. If you wish to do so, please submit your publication highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Clearly indicate which of the authors is an InterPore member (or the institute with an Institutional Membership). Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online).

The highlight should be short (max 100 words) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.
