Dear InterPore colleagues,

InterPore2023 in Scotland… thirst thing I think about when thinking about Scotland is their famous drink. I suppose we should experience some of it while being there. Carefully, of course, as the scientific content of that week will be the main course. A taste of that can be found in the InJournals section.

All the best,

Minisymposia

MS06-A Thanks to progress in imaging and numerical modelling in the past decade, our understanding of the physics of transport at the pore and meso-scale has improved tremendously. The purpose of this minisymposium is to provide forum to share and explore recent insights into multiphase displacement physics through experiments, modelling and theory development. Examples of potential topics of interest include… read more

MS07 Various applications of societal and technological relevance involve flow, (multi-phase) transport, and deformation or reaction in natural (e.g. geological) or synthetic porous media. Mathematical and numerical simulation methods are key tools for understanding these processes. When designing efficient simulation methods, at least two major challenges appear. The first is related to the fact that the mathematical models are coupled systems of highly nonlinear equations, and the second is due to… read more

Social events

The InterPore2023 LOC has organized a tour of the Holyrood Distillery on Sunday, 21 May. We’ll learn about the distillation process and get to sample the results at this scotch whisky distillery in the heart of Edinburgh. Tickets for the event will be available for purchase with your conference registration and are also included as part of the “accompanying guest” package. More information can be found on our website.

Did you know….Edinburgh?

InterPore2023 will be in Edinburgh. Edinburgh has a lot of things to offer with respect to science, science history and porous media. This week: The Scotch Whisky Experience.

In the heart of Edinburgh’s old town, at the top of the Royal Mile and in the shadow of Edinburgh’s castle, the Scotch Whisky Experience’s tours offer the possibilities for experts and novices alike to discover the joy of one of the most prominent Scottish industries. Take a sensational journey through a replica distillery, explore Scotland’s diverse whisky regions and the flavours that the countryside imparts to its whiskies, experience for yourself the varying aromas and whether you like fruity, sweet, or smoky flavours, before your expert guide imparts the secrets of the Whisky regions and helps you choose your perfect ‘dram’ to taste in one of the largest whisky collections in the world.

Da Silva joins Industry Committee

Thomas Ramstad, principal researcher and project manager in reservoir technology at Equinor ASA, has stepped down as Co-Chair of the InterPore Industry Committee, of which he has been a member since its formation in 2019 and has co-chaired with Mark Knackstedt since March 2021.

We are very fortunate that Thomas was able to appoint a replacement, Dr. William Da Silva. William is employed with the Equinor office in Brazil. He has a strong background from both academia and industry, working on various topics. Equinor Brazil has a formal commitment to support local academia and research, and both William and Thomas believe that InterPore can serve as one of several common platforms for researchers from industry and academia. We thank Thomas very much for his valuable support of InterPore and look forward to the continued work ahead.

Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer 2023

The Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer is Professor Adrian Bejan from Duke University, USA. His lecture, entitled Vascular materials: Predicting Design Evolution, will focus on one of his major contributions: evolutionary design illustrated in the case of multiscale vasculature, a methodology that can be used generally to predict the evolution toward flow access, miniaturization, high density of heat transfer, and the scaling up (or down) of an existing design. (full bio and abstract)

Special Issue: Mixing in Porous Media

Marco Dentz, Daniel R. Lester, Michel F.M. Speentjes

Mixing in porous media is a multi-scale phenomenon with spatial scales ranging from micrometers (pores and capillaries) to kilometers (aquifers and reservoirs) and temporal scales that range from seconds to years. It is interdisciplinary with applications that range from speleogenesis to nutrient transport in biological tissue. The special issue is motivated by the 2020 Lorentz conference Mixing in Porous Media. It contains 2 review papers and 20 research papers that cover different aspects of mixing in porous and fractured media, at the pore and continuum scale, in single fractures and fracture networks.

Stochastic Microstructure Delineation and Flow Simulation in Asymmetric Block Copolymer Ultrafiltration Membranes

M. Sadegh Riasi, Lieihn Tsaur, Yuk Mun Li, Qi Zhang, Ulrich Wiesner, Lilit Yeghiazarian

Asymmetric block copolymer ultrafiltration membranes have a wide range of applications from water purification and virus filtration all the way to drug delivery. Although optimizing flow is critical to the performance of such membranes, their numerical flow characterization has remained challenging. The main problems include hierarchical pore structure delineation and lack of an efficient, image-based pore-scale modeling approach. In this study, we use 2D SEM images with a variety of resolutions to delineate the hierarchical asymmetric pore structure and a novel stochastic pore network model to simulate flow. Our results show good agreement between simulated and measured permeabilities.

InterPore Members can promote their publications to the community via the InterPore In Journals Section of the Newsletter. If you wish to do so, please submit your publication highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Clearly indicate which of the authors is an InterPore member (or the institute with an Institutional Membership). Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online).

The highlight should be short (max 100 words) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.
