interpore news

Dear InterPore colleagues,

Today’s Newsletter is one to share with many colleagues and MSc students for many reasons. The first is to suggest those colleagues to sign up for the Newsletter too, as it has a lot of useful information! Second, also for students, we’re receiving many new job opportunities, from PhD positions to Full Professor positions. Thirdly, you’ll be informed with the latest updates on InterPore2022, you can work with your colleagues to organize a meeting with the KC Lecturer (this year: Jacques Huyghe) and fourthly, fifthly… etc., all the useful and nice info we share with our InterPore community!

Happy reading and sharing!

Free visit to the Louvre Abu Dhabi

Dhabi’s plaza © Louvre Abu Dhabi
Photography: Mohamed Somji

Thanks to a generous donation from the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Culture and Tourism, all in-person participants and accompanying guests will receive complementary tickets to the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Participants are able to visit the museum at their leisure while in Abu Dhabi.

Designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Jean Nouvel and featuring a web-patterned dome meant to represent “rays of sunlight passing through date palm fronds in an oasis”, the museum itself is a work of art. The exhibitions within explore the connections between cultures and are intended to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western art.

Conference Grants

The InterPore Foundation continues to offer conference grants to scientists and graduate students from countries with lower- or middle-income economies. This year, seven conference grants were approved out of 22 applicants. The majority of them will receive travel support so they are able to personally attend the InterPore 2022 annual conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Since 2018, a total of 70 applicants have obtained grants.

The InterPore Foundation would like to express gratitude to all the members for their generous donations. These conference grants would not be possible without their support.

Call for Contributions: The WikiPore Software Catalogue

Using and developing software is an integral part of most scientists’ daily work and porous media research is no exception here. We employ and write software for pretty much everything ranging from digitizing a real porous sample to evaluating the results of simulating the flow through it. But what software is out there to accomplish the individual tasks in our research workflows? The WikiPore Software Catalogue is here for helping you find the right software packages for any research question related to porous media.

Since the announcement of the new WikiPore in July 2021, the InterPore team has worked hard on optimizing the catalogue part. It has been freshly equipped with a few entries and is hopefully ready for production. We rely on you, the InterPore community, to make the catalogue a success and useful for our researchers. We heartily invite you to pick your favorite software packages dedicated to porous-media research and upload contributions to the catalogue: Please login to MY INTERPORE and click on Submit WikiPore Software to add a new entry.

We welcome all contributions of software packages focusing explicitly on porous-media applications, not necessarily general-purpose packages like word processing products. Please don’t hesitate to submit suggestions for improvement to Bernd Flemisch.

Professor Jacques Huyghe will be the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer for 2022. As such, he will share a topic relevant to the industrial porous media community through a series of lectures at various member and non-member organizations.

The title of his lecture:
Poromechanics in extremely large deformation: swelling and fracture

An abstract of the talk and a short biography of Prof. Dr. Huyghe can be found on our website.

Apply now to host one of the 2022 InterPore Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecture series at your institute. Please visit our website for further information on how to apply.

Call for Papers

Frontiers in Water and Frontiers in Physics are launching a new topic: Nonequilibrium Multiphase and Reactive Flows in Porous and Granular Materials

Topic editor: Ran Holtzman

This collection will gather papers aiming to model, understand, predict, and even control multiphase and reactive flows, where nonequilibrium often prevails leading to instabilities, the emergence of complex patterns and preferential pathways, and dependencies on the path and rate of external driving forces. We wish to bring together experimental, theoretical, and numerical contributions from diverse fields across engineering, physics, and mathematics including fluid mechanics, earth sciences, soil mechanics, and more.

For more info, follow this link to their website.

French InterPore Chapter reports new journal

Oil & Gas Science and Technology (OGST), an academic journal headed by IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN), is taking on a new identity to become Science and Technology for Energy Transition (STET). Its aim is to become a genuine forum for exchange and sharing of scientific findings related to an efficient and sustainable energy transition in response to climate change. In support of this change, IFPEN has joined forces with the CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission), a major player in French energy research. STET is an open-access journal with no publication costs (APC) for authors. Manuscripts are reviewed using standard procedures.

You can find STET here.
