interpore news

Dear InterPore colleagues,
A new edition of the InterPore Newsletter with a great variety of
items. A new InterPore employee, practical news and calls for InterPore2021, reports and science…

From last week’s questionnaire, we learned that there is plenty of interest in our InterPore2021
social program. We will do our best to get as much social interaction as possible online. The speed
networking events are already planned, and we will do more in Whova: how about special coffee break
rooms! (already being scheduled) Another very interesting new Whova feature: create your own
break-out room through Whova for a one-on-one conversation, or perhaps with a group. Practical
explanations about what and how will follow soon.

Not all the suggestions fit in the program, but Whova also features a message board. Feel free to
create your own thread and start sharing, for example, video tours through your lab! With many of us
still stuck at home, I am also looking forward again to the thread with pictures from all the home
office desks.

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

Musicians wanted!

On behalf of the organizers, the Student Affairs Committee invites you to join us in an
online music presentation at our traditional social event during InterPore2021. Sing your favorite
song, play your favorite music on piano, guitar or any other instrument. Invite colleagues, friends
or family members to perform together as a band… A melancholic song or some guitar shredding, we
hope for a diverse program!

Melancholic song or guitar shredding!

The call to all our talented musicians is now open. Please send an email to sac@interpore.org. Let’s
have an awesome broadcast on Tuesday, 01 June at 6pm CEST!

Please refer to our website for more
information on the SAC music event.`

Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer
2020 report

Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer 2020, Professor Veerle Cnudde from Ghent
University, Belgium, had a very productive and nice virtual visit at Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory, California, USA.

About 25 participants joined Prof. Cnudde’s seminar. There were Q&A and discussions right after
the talk, which covered topics such as the application of tomography imaging for microbial
activities, linking laboratory imaging measurements with the actual environment, data accessibility
& sharing, and better integration of imaging and modeling. After the seminar, Prof. Cnudde also
had individual meetings with five scientists at Berkeley Lab, including the lead of the medical CT
imaging group and the tomography beamline scientist at Advanced Light Source. The discussions
covered ongoing research projects, collaborative opportunities, and InterPore networking.

In case of questions, please contact Dr. Hang Deng (mail / website).

Time Capsule Video: Ghislain de Marsily

The latest InterPore Time Capsule Video has been uploaded to the InterPore YouTube
channel. It can be viewed here.

Ghislain de Marsily is a highly acclaimed, internationally renowned scientist and pioneer in the
development of stochastic hydrogeology and inverse methods. He is Professor Emeritus at the
University Pierre et Marie Curie, France. In his childhood, he contracted polio resulting in a year
of immobility. Nevertheless, he managed to continue learning and go on to become a hydrologist. For
his numerous and groundbreaking achievements, he has received a large number of prestigious awards,
including the highest French medals of honor: Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur and Chevalier de
l’Ordre national du mérite. He has been elected as a member of Academy of Europe and Foreign member
of US National Academy of Engineering.

In this Time Capsule, Prof. de Marsilly is interviewed by Dr. Benoît Noetinger, IFP Energies
Nouvelles, France; Dr. Mickaele Le Ravalec, IFP Energies Nouvelles, France; and Dr. Michel Quintard,
Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, France.

InterPore is greatly thankful to IFP Energies Nouvelles for sponsoring this time capsule and
arranging for its production.

SIAM
conference on Mathematical and Computational issues in the geosciences

21 – 24 June 2021, online

The next SIAM Conference on Mathematical and Computational Issues in the Geosciences takes place this
year on 21-24 June. The meeting, organized by SIAM and the Department of Mathematics of Politecnico
di Milano, Italy, is the flagship event of the SIAM Activity Group on Geosciences (SIAG/GS).

The event is in cooperation with SIMAI and InterPore, with the sponsorship of EnginSoft SpA, IFPEN
and INGV.

Registration is open through the website from the
Politecnico di Milano
. InterPore and SIAG/GS members are eligible for a reduced fee.

Information on the plenary speakers and three mini-tutorial sessions can be found here
(68 KB).

The conference will be held virtually using the Vfairs platform to allow for synchronous and
asynchronous participation and facilitate a fruitful interaction among participants. All
presentations will be recorded and made available for on-demand viewing. The platform will stay up
and accessible to registrants for one month from the first day of the conference.

For further information on the program, please visit the conference website.

Conference Chairs: Luca Formaggia (Politecnico di Milano, Italy) and Youssef Marzouk (MIT, USA).

Pore-Scale Mixing
and the Evolution of Hydrodynamic Dispersion in Porous Media

Alexandre Puyguiraud, Philippe Gouze, and Marco Dentz

Direct numerical simulations (Figure) show that solute dispersion in a porous media evolves with
time, and depends on the spatial distribution of the fluid velocity, which is controlled by the
geometry and structure of the pore space. The detailed large-scale characterization of porous media
is not feasible due to their complexity and multi-scale nature. A theory is derived to predict
solute migration from a few salient medium and flow characteristics based on the abstraction of the
porous medium as a network of conducts along which solute moves at variable travel times. This
picture allows estimating residence times in porous media and assessing the migration and
distribution of dissolved chemicals.
