interpore news

Dear InterPore friends,

We have a fully packed Newsletter today. In view of time, any items you want to skip? In that case
you would miss for example the musical invitation to InterPore2021. Or the InterPore award winners,
two very nice scientific publications, online lectures to join, our new webmaster, PhD opportunities
for you or your master students, the German Chapter meeting book of abstracts…

How about: We kept the items short, so you don’t need to choose! Keep things short also applies to
me, so…

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

Porous media scientists elected to the
US-NAE

Among the scientists recently elected as new members of the US
National Academy of Engineering
(NAE) are two InterPore members:

Election to the NAE is considered to be among the highest recognition in engineering-related fields,
and it often comes as a recognition of a lifetime’s worth of accomplishments. Congratulations to
both Professor Pyrak-Nolte and Professor Hill.

InterPore Organizational Update

In an effort to streamline organization and reduce overhead expenses, the InterPore
office has recently gone through a slight restructure. In addition to her other duties, InterPore’s
administrative assistant, Meghan McCarroll, has taken over the tasks of webmaster from Sebastian
Riedel who has recently departed from InterPore.

Meghan will handle any updates to and issues with the society webpages, as well as coordinate larger
IT tasks with our third-party provider. Meghan can be contacted regarding any website issues at the
webmaster address or directly.

We would like to thank Sebastian Riedel for his contribution as Webmaster for
InterPore. Sebastian began working for InterPore on 01 October 2018 and his last day was 04 February
2021.

During this time Sebastian had the critical role of maintaining the website and troubleshooting all
IT issues for members. Sebastian was instrumental in the development and transition of the new
InterPore.org webpage launched in June 2020. He also helped facilitate and execute IT and technical
support during the first online conference InterPore2020. We wish Sebastian all the best for his
future endeavors.

News on National Chapters

InterPore National Chapters are the remote beating hearts of InterPore in many different countries.
Sixteen Chapters already exist and five more are in formation.

To share experiences and ideas, two meetings (instead of one due to the time-difference spanning from
+9 to -7 hours over the countries under concern) will be held online with the Chapters Chairs (or
representatives) on 16 and 18 March 2021. This will be the opportunity to interact
and discuss about past and upcoming activities, the guidelines for the management of the Chapters
and the expectations.

Please contact your Chapter Chair in case you have questions or input for the meeting, or contact the
InterPore office if you have questions about the
presence/absence of a chapter in your country.

German Chapter Meeting
2021 in review

The German Chapter of InterPore,
organised by SFB 1313 of the University of
Stuttgart
, was successfully held online from 1 – 2 February 2021. The conference, the
biggest National InterPore Chapter so far, enabled an interdisciplinary exchange between experts
from research institutions, universities, and industry.

The meeting was opened by Professor Majid
Hassanizadeh
, co-founder of InterPore and SFB 1313‘s external partner and senior professor
of the University of Stuttgart. Over 70 people from Switzerland, Belgium, and all over Germany
attended the meeting, which was divided into six different sessions over the two days.

More details, including a link to the book of abstracts (172 KB), can be found here.

The origin of hysteresis and memory of two-phase flow in
disordered media

Ran Holtzman, Marco Dentz, Ramon Planet, Jordi Ortin

Cyclic fluid-fluid displacements in disordered media feature hysteresis, multivaluedness, and memory
properties in the pressure-saturation relationship. Quantitative understanding of the underlying
pore-scale mechanisms and their extrapolation across scales constitutes a major challenge. Here we
find that the capillary action of a single constriction in the fluid passage contains the key
features of hysteresis. This insight forms the building block for an ab initio model that provides
the quantitative link between the microscopic capillary physics, spatially-extended collective
events (Haines jumps) and large-scale hysteresis. The mechanisms identified here apply to a broad
range of problems in hydrology, geophysics and engineering.

Lucas–Washburn
Equation-Based Modeling of Capillary-Driven Flow in Porous Systems

Jianchao Cai, Tingxu Jin, Jisheng Kou, Shuangmei Zou, Junfeng Xiao, Qingbang Meng

In this Invited Feature Article, the theoretical basis of the classical Lucas–Washburn (LW) equation
is first introduced and recent progress in mathematical models is then summarized to demonstrate the
modifications and extensions of this equation to various microchannels and porous media. These
include capillary tubes with nonuniform and noncircular cross-sections, discrete fractures, and
capillary tubes that are not straight as well as heterogeneous porous media. Numerical studies on
the LW equation are also reviewed, and comments on future works and research directions for LW-based
capillary-driven flows in porous systems are listed.
