interpore news

Dear InterPore friends,

Next week at Utrecht University, our third year bachelor course “Introduction Porous Media” starts. I
went through my house, making 3-5 second movie clips of various porous materials. Sponges, clothes,
plant roots, diapers, batteries, coffee pads… it made my wife wonder: “what is not porous?”
Exactly right! (we thought of glass and an umbrella.)
Compiling those movie clips into my
“pre-recorded” lecture was fun yet time-consuming, and I hope the students will appreciate porous
materials a little bit more after seeing the lecture.
Of course, pre-recording a lecture
reminded me of InterPore2021 (a few days left before the abstract deadline!). I am already
looking forward to seeing all the pre-recorded talks. And with lessons learned from last year, I am
confident that InterPore2021 will be even better in respect to facilitating scientific discussions
as well as offering a platform for social events.

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

Career Development Event

The Student Affairs Committee (SAC) organizes a series of events targeted at the community of early
career researchers. Here we highlight their Career Development Event that will also take place at
InterPore2021. Many students struggle with the decision of which career path to follow after the
PhD. Should I pursue an academic career or search for possibilities in industry or governmental
agencies? What are the pros (and cons) of each career path? What does the life-after-PhD feel like?
To help shed light onto these big questions, the SAC will invite a set of established professionals
to share their personal views and experiences. In this session, we will not hear about their latest
research results but instead about their different professional pathways and the important choices
they had to make along the way.
