interpore news

Dear InterPore friends,

Are you still working from home or are you allowed back into the office? My part of today’s
Newsletter is made from home, but the Netherlands is almost completely opening up after various
stages of lockdowns, even though the number of positive cases is still pretty high. I guess no one
really knows whether that is still the pandemic, or a normal infection number for the time of the
year. We never did daily testing on a global scale! With the vaccines in our veins, the world is
becoming safer, but we must make sure that every single individual in the world has the opportunity
to receive a vaccine.

So, what’s on offer? A scientific paper, many positions, InterPore Chapter news, updates from the
InterPore Academy, the KC Lecturer, and InterPore2022 updates including opportunities for sponsors
and more.

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

Physical – Hybrid – Online?

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, InterPore2022 is currently being planned as a hybrid
conference. Owing to the mutable nature of various regulations, however, it may be necessary to
convene online only. A final decision will be made and announced in December 2021.

Plenary speaker: Prof. Dr. Peng Xu

Professor Dr. Peng Xu from
China Jiliang University will give a plenary talk entitled “Fractal Theory of Porous
Media”
. Over the past four decades, fractal geometry has sparked considerable interest
in many disciplines to characterize irregular and disorder objects that traditional Euclidean
geometry fails to analyze. In the talk, Peng Xu will firstly review the background and applications
of fractal geometry in porous media, and the fractal theory and methods to characterize and
reconstruct the complex structures of porous media are illustrated. He will also introduce the
fractal models for the transport properties of porous media.

Please visit the
website
for more info on InterPore plenary speakers.

Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer 2022

Professor Jacques Huyghe will be the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished
Lecturer for 2022. As such, he will share a topic relevant to the industrial porous media community
through a series of lectures at various member and non-member organizations.

The title of his lecture:
Poromechanics in extremely large deformation: swelling and
fracture

An abstract of the talk and a short biography of Prof. Dr. Huyghe can be found on our website.

Album of Porous Media Structure and
Dynamics

We would like to express our gratitude to the InterPore members, and the porous media
community in general, for supporting the Album of
Porous Media Structure and Dynamics
. The submission deadline was 15 August, and we received
more than 120 entries from more than 280 authors covering a broad range of porous media topics. We
have now started the pre-screening of the received works and soon we will begin with the peer review
process. Thank you all for supporting the album!

German Chapter
news

The German InterPore Chapter has put out a
call
for ongoing (inter)national collaborations in order to gain an overview of the
different research projects being pursued at or with German institutions that focus on technical,
biological or geological porous media. This initiative offers facilities to get relevant information
together and available in an attempt to further strengthen the collaborations of German researchers.
Please find out more here.

Special Issues

A number of special issues have been initiated after InterPore2020. More than 100 scientific papers
were submitted, and a large number have been accepted for publication. Announcements will be made
when a special issue becomes available. The table below provides an overview of what is coming. Much
appreciation to Dr.
Wendong Wang
for taking the lead in this project.

InterPore2022 is also preparing a number of special issues, which will be presented in the next
Newsletter.

Probabilistic nucleation governs time, amount, and location of mineral precipitation and geometry
evolution in the porous medium

Mohammad Nooraiepour, Mohammad Masoudi & Helge Hellevang

A critical question in reactive transport is how pore-scale processes can be upscaled and how
predictions can be made on the mutual effect of chemical processes and fluid flow in the porous
medium. For mineral precipitation, it is paramount to predict the location of crystals besides their
amount. However, current models fail to predict precisely where crystals will nucleate and grow in
the spatiotemporal domain. We present a new mathematical model and LBM representation for
probabilistic mineral nucleation and precipitation. The work provides insight into the evolution of
porous media by suggesting probabilistic and deterministic domains. Furthermore, we indicate in
which length- and time-scales it is essential to incorporate probabilistic nucleation for valid
predictions.
