interpore news

Dear InterPore friends,

Today’s Newsletter looks into the (near) future. The last opportunity for the book on porous media
research in images. A one of its kind (or the start of something new). New short courses are
announced and we look ahead to InterPore2022.

A special mention for Majid, as he is elected to the Academia Europaea. It goes along with a call to
all whom receive prices or honorable memberships in recognition of porous media research (or if you
know about a colleague who did): Please let us know! From a Nobel prize to a best master thesis
award, it is great news to share with the community. (We would probably have heard about the Nobel
prize)

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

The various InterPore committees and office team have already begun making preparations for
InterPore2022!

The 14th Annual InterPore Meeting will be held at the Shangri-La Hotel in the heart of Qingdao, named
one of the most livable cities in China. The international port city is best known for Tsingtao Beer
and international festivals which promote economic & cultural exchanges between China and others
all over the world.

In order to accommodate those who, for various reasons, may be unable to join in the physical
meeting, InterPore2022 will also offer the option to participate and present online. This new
“hybrid” format will provide ample opportunities for learning and networking – whether you are with
us at the Shangri-La in Qingdao or joining from home. More details about the hybrid format will
follow in the coming months. Meanwhile, make sure to mark your calendars – here are the important
dates you’ll need to know for InterPore2022!

Kimberly-Clark Review and Invitation

The Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer Series in 2021 features Prof. Dr. Muhammad
Sahimi
from University of Southern California, USA. Prof. Sahimi has still a few
opportunities left to give an lecture. He lectures on various topics:

  • Use of wavelet transformations for characterization, modeling, and upscaling of porous media

  • Multipoint geostatistical modeling of porous media

  • Swelling and deformation of porous media

  • Atomistic modeling of nanoporous membranes.

If possible, Prof. Sahimi will come to your institute in person. Alternatively, he will present
online. Interested? Please request his lecture by filling out the application
form
and returning it to the InterPore
office
.

InterPore YouTube Channel

Checked out the InterPore YouTube channel
lately? There is much new content available and more being added regularly. We’ve posted the InterPore
Academy Webinars
– so far you can find Rainer Helmig’s lecture “From the brain to the fuel
cell – porous media are everywhere” and Behnam Pourdeyhimi’s “Facemasks & Respirators –
Technology, Manufacturing & Performance” lecture. We’re in the process of adding much of the
content from InterPore2021
– invited and keynote lectures, the Music & Magic event, ceremonies, and company pitches. Be
sure to subscribe to our channel to stay abreast of all the latest videos!

WikiPore

WikiPore is a freely accessible knowledge and an
open-collaborative portal on the topic of porous media with unbiased and high quality contents. It
will contain knowledge and latest research findings contributed by the porous media science
community, ranging from basic definitions, as in textbooks, to latest research. Moreover, it
introduces key and instrumental software and resources used in porous media science which can be
beneficial to a wide range of stakeholder groups ranging from academia to industry.

WikiPore will contribute toward one of our main missions as provider of valuable knowledge, its
dissemination as well as linking community across disciplines and sectors.

WikiPore includes two main sections, Articles and
Software. To contribute to WikiPore, please login

Academia Europaea membership for Majid

InterPore Managing Director, Prof. S. Majid Hassanizadeh, has been elected to the
membership of Academia
Europaea
.

The Academia Europaea (formed in 1988) is the pan-European academy of science, humanities and
letters. The Academia has a membership of over 4000 eminent international scholars from all
disciplines, nationalities and geographical locations, but with the majority from Europe. Each year,
between 300 to 400 international scholars are elected to membership in Academia Europaea, following
a rigorous peer review
process
.

Congratulations, Majid!

If you or a colleague have received a price or an honorable membership in recognition of
important contributions to the field of porous media research, please let us know! It is great news to share
with the community.

Album of Porous Media Structure and
Dynamics

LAST CALL for pictures!!!

Don’t miss the chance to be part of the FIRST album exclusively dedicated to capture the beauty and
complexity of porous media!

The intent of the Album of Porous Media Structure and Dynamics, is to compile a collection of
eye-catching state-of-the-art visualization of the different science and engineering aspects of
porous media, as well as to serve as a reference for research and education.

Topics of scientific work include, but are not limited to, experimental and computational
visualizations, visualization of new porous materials, visualization of transport processes
occurring within porous materials, high-resolution pore morphology, and illustrations of
historical/transcendental observations of porous media.

Submitted contributions will be peer-reviewed according to the relevance and innovation of the
artwork. After the peer-reviewed process a hard copy book with all the contributions will be printed
and indexed by Springer. Submissions should include an image and a brief accompanying caption of no
more than 1000 characters describing the novelty of the work. Contributions accepted for publication
in the album are free of charge. To submit a contribution please visit our website.

Deadline for submissions is 31 July 2021.

1st symposium of the Israeli InterPore
Chapter

The founding committee (from left to right): Yaniv Edery (Technion), Alexandros
Terzis (Technion), Avinoam Rabinovich (Tel Aviv University), Brian Berkowitz (Weizmann Institute
of
Science) and Scott K. Hansen (Ben-Gurion University of the Negev), as well as Nimrod Schwartz
(the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem).

The first symposium was held the 1st of July in Tel Aviv. The symposium focused on
igniting and fostering collaboration among a broad network of Israeli researchers of different
disciplines coming from academia, research institutes, and industry. More than 50 participants used
this opportunity to discuss recent research achievements, as well as research-related problems to
enable multi-disciplinary collaborations in porous media-related research across Israel.

Thematic Areas were

  • Multiphase flow in porous media

  • Experimental methods in porous media

  • Computational methods in porous media

  • Industrial and biological porous media

It was a great socializing event especially during the poster session and the informal meetings after
the lectures.

During the symposium, Yaniv Edery (chair), Avinoam Rabinovich (Vice Chairs/Communication
Officers) and Alexandros Terzis (Vice
Chairs/Communication Officers) have been elected as members of a committee which is in charge of
organizing future InterPore meetings in Israel. Dror
Ettlinger
is the student representative.
