InterPore Germany Meetings – First General Assembly of InterPore Germany

5-6 December 2016 – First General Assembly of the German National Chapter

The First General Assembly of the German National Chapter was held at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ in Leipzig 5-6 December 2016. It brought together over 80 experts from numerous German research institutions, universities, and industry to foster the interdisciplinary exchange and to bridge gaps.

The conference was opened by Prof. Georg Teutsch, Scientific Director of the UFZ, and Prof. Olaf Kolditz, Head of the Department of Environmental Informatics. In his opening speech, Prof. Teutsch offered a geohydrological perspective on large-scale modelling and gave some insights into the modelling philosophy followed at the UFZ, expressing the wish that the different experimental and modelling approaches inspire each other.

The meeting then started with the keynote by Prof. Rainer Helmig from the University of Stuttgart who enthusiastically highlighted the large diversity of applications that transport in porous media as well as its surface coupling to free flow can have in biomedical, industrial and geohydrological research.

The scientific programme of the meeting comprised one thread of sessions with a total of 31 talks and 10 poster presentations. In the spirit of the InterPore society, the topics covered vastly different applications from nuclear to biomedical research, from pore-scale transport of nano-colloidal suspensions to large-scale subsurface heat storage, from multi-phase flow to hydraulic fracturing, and so on.

The participants joined for dinner at Leipzig’s Ratskeller and enjoyed a pleasant evening view over the city from Germany’s highest city hall tower.

During the meeting, the Steering Committee of the German Chapter of InterPore held its regular assembly, and thanked Prof. Kolditz as member of the Steering Committee and host of the first national meeting for the excellent organisation of this event on relatively short notice. They also rallied behind the efforts of the UFZ to win the bid to organise the 11th International Conference on Porous Media & Annual Meeting of InterPore 2019 in Leipzig with more than 800 participants from all over the world. Following this first national event, future meetings of the German Chapter of InterPore will be organised on a biannual basis at varying locations.

On behalf of the organising team, we would once again like to thank all participants, session chairs and exhibitors who contributed to the success of this event.
