PORE 1-6: Interfacial chemistry/Geochemistry and reactive transport in porous media

PORE 1-6: Interfacial chemistry/Geochemistry and reactive transport in porous media

Summary of the Course:

Chemical reactions interact with mechanical, hydrodynamic and thermal processes to alter the properties of the fluids and the porous media, which in turn can affect the progress of chemical processes. In this course, we will revisit the fundamentals of interfacial chemistry, geochemistry and reactive transport, including overviews of thermodynamics and kinetics, transport mechanisms, characterization of surface properties, reactive transport modeling basics, and introductions of commonly used reactive transport codes. This course will also illustrate different groups of reactions and their coupling with flow and transport via several application examples, such as geological carbon storage, nuclear waste disposal, contaminant transport, and oil and gas production.

The goal of the course is to introduce to the students tools available and to prepare them for developing  simple reactive transport models for their chosen problems.
