Dear InterPore friends,

What a week! Wonderful! What else is there to say…?
Well, thanks to all who’ve attended, who’ve contributed, who’ve managed all the technical aspects, made the program, ran the sessions…

…and for those who missed it? You may not be too late, as you can read below!

Also: Many job opportunities, a special issue opportunity and something interesting called thermoporometry.

All the best,

A Word from the President

With InterPore’s first online Annual Meeting now coming to a close, I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who made this online event possible. An immense amount of work went into it. Thank you to all of you who joined online. I hope many of you have found new energy, new inspiration and new collaborations for innovative future research and applications porous media science and engineerng.

We will use this experience as an opportunity to learn for future online events. Of course, I also hope that we can soon resume in-person conferences, too, thinking in particular about the National Chapter meetings and InterPore2021, but I am glad that we were able to find a manageable solution for InterPore2020 in these quickly changing times.

Please stay safe and healthy!
Laura Pyrak-Nolte
InterPore, President

Registration to InterPore2020 extended to Sept 10

Due to the overwhelming amount of positive feedback we have received on the quality content made available and created during InterPore2020, we have decided to keep registration open!

While the live portion of the conference has come to an end, there is still a lot of opportunity to engage and learn. Over 500 pre-recorded presentations, recordings of all live sessions, including the Opening & Closing Ceremonies, Award Ceremonies, Keynote Lectures, Invited Speaker Presentations and the Q&A Sessions, will all be available for viewing on Whova until September 10, 2020, midnight PST. You can also continue to visit our exhibitor booths, where you can complete your passports for the chance at a free registration at InterPore2021; ask and answer questions related to all of the talks; and take advantage of the Community boards, where you can discuss the latest topics and research related to porous media.

Registration is being offered at 50% off the regular registration rate and proceeds will go to the InterPore Foundation. Not only will you gain access to a world-class online conference, your participation will promote and support innovative research, support educational activities of the InterPore society and finance awards for excellence and diversity in the broad field of porous media and for honoring distinguished talented researchers and lecturers.

Special Issue: Applied Geochemistry

A special issue in Applied Geochemistry is dedicated to work shown at InterPore2020. It provides a good opportunity to further strengthen the visibility of your work to the community. You can find more information about the special issue here.

More information on other InterPore2020 related special issues being initiated can be found here.

Special Issue in MDPI’s Energies

Modeling Multiphase Flow and Reactive Transport in Porous Media

A special issue is launched in the MDPI journal Energies by Dr. R. Soltanian, Dr. M. Fahs, Dr. H. Hoteit, Prof. Z. Dai and Prof. Dr. J. Carrera. The special issue focuses on recent advances and developments in the modeling of multiphase flow and reactive transport in porous media. The goal is to include comprehensive review papers and recent experimental, theoretical, and numerical results, related to the study of complexities in describing multiphase flow dynamics and transport in porous media across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, including uncertainty analysis and risk assessment of operations.

We are happy to invite you to our next Porous Media Tea Time Talks (#PorousMediaTTT) session at 25 August 2020 at 3 pm CEST local time on our YouTube Channel.

The goal of the Porous Media TTT is to act as a complimentary platform to the already very successful Geoscience and Geoenergy webinars with the focus placed on young professionals.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you online!

A novel approach for advanced thermoporometry characterization of mesoporous solids: Transition kernels and the serially connected pore model

HRNB Enninful, D Schneider, R Kohns, D Enke, R Valiullin

Thermoporometry (and NMR cryoporometry), is fast gaining popularity for the characterisation of mesoporous materials before their wide arrayed applications. Among its numerous advantages over other techniques is its application to wet samples.

In this work, we have provided a framework to better provide structural details of porous materials. Specifically, a set of kernels containing a variable non-frozen layer (NFL) thickness and the impact of thermodynamic fluctuations on phase transitions have been implemented. These kernels have been applied to the serially-connected pore model (SCPM), which incorporates advanced melting and reveals disorder in, even, random pores, to characterise MCM-41 and SBA-15 materials.

InterPore Members, do you want to promote your publication to the community? If so, please submit your highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Clearly indicate which of the authors is an InterPore member (or the institute with an Institutional Membership). Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online).

The highlight should be short (max 100 words) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.
