InterPore News featuring InterPore Elections and Chapter Updates

Sent on: 18-09-2026

Dear InterPore colleagues,

It was during my very first scientific conference that a professor gave a lecture about aerosols produced by laser printers, which was a reason to move these printers away from working areas. Later outside, I asked him whether he wasn’t becoming paranoid by studying such hazards. He casually lit a cigarette and replied that laser printers weren’t his main health concern(!).

Some encounters stick with you forever, and many for me involve going places and meeting people. Preparations for InterPore2027 in Rio are underway, and we hope that will be a great place for new encounters. The same goes for national chapter meetings and webinars/courses being announced below in today’s Newsletter.

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter
Editor-in-Chief

📅 Voting period: 1–30 November 2026

Your participation matters. We encourage all current InterPore members to take this opportunity to engage in the Society’s elections and help shape the future of our community.

Meet the InterPore Community: National Chapters are dynamic, country-wide groups within InterPore that bring together researchers, professionals, and students working in porous media science and engineering. These chapters act as local hubs for scientific exchange, collaboration, and networking, while contributing to the global mission of InterPore.

The 9th National Workshop in Porous Media will take place in Trondheim on 27 November 2026.

The workshop will bring together researchers and engineers from academia and industry to discuss recent advances in porous media science, with presentations spanning fractured porous media, transport processes, microfluidics, rheology, and energy-related applications.

The meeting will also host the first edition of the InterPore Norway Awards for Excellence in Porous Media Research, recognizing outstanding Master's and PhD research conducted in Norway.

We look forward to a day of scientific discussion, networking, and new collaborations.

Save the date!

The InterPore Canada Chapter Kick-off Meeting will take place 3-4 June 2027. Stay tuned for more information about abstract submission and registration coming soon.

PORE 2-8.1: Multiscale modeling and simulation of fractured porous rocks: from CO2 and H2 storage to geothermal energy production

14-17 December 2026, online with Hadi Hajibeygi

Hadi Hajibeygi is a professor of Geo-Energy Solid and Fluid Mechanics at Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands). This short course is offered to enable the attendees to get an in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with multiscale simulation of multiphase flow in fractured reservoirs.

Many thanks to all who joined the recent webinar with Bo Guo (University of Arizona, USA) on the topic of “PFAS Transport in Unsaturated Porous Media Across Scales: Interfacial Partitioning, Thin Water Films, and Upscaling.”

For those who missed out, you can view a recording of the session here.

Our next Academy webinar will take place on 20 October 2026 with Wen Song (University of Texas at Austin) on the topic of critical minerals recovery.

Researchers working on soil gases and related environmental and geological processes may be interested in the upcoming international conference “Soil Gases in Environmental and Geological Processes,” hosted by the HUN-REN Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences in Budapest, Hungary, on 6 November 2026.

Topics include natural hydrogen, CCS monitoring, radon, the carbon cycle, agricultural and microbiological processes, nitrogen and anthropogenic gases in soils. Both oral and PICO presentations are welcome, and online participation is also available.

The abstract submission and early registration deadline is 30 September 2026.

ISC: Help Shape a Global Standard for AI Disclosure in Research

How should researchers disclose their use of artificial intelligence?

The International Science Council (ISC), together other partners, is working towards a Global Reporting Standard for AI Disclosure in Research. The aim is to establish a broadly supported approach that makes the use of AI in research more transparent and consistent across disciplines, publication cultures and organizations.

The second round of the global consultation is now open and seeks input Researchers, editors, publishers, institutions and others involved in the research ecosystem are invited to contribute. The consultation closes on 16 October 2026.

ISC: UNESCO–Al Fozan International Prize for Young Scientists in STEM

Nominations and applications are open for the third edition of the UNESCO–Al Fozan International Prize for the Promotion of Young Scientists in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Awarded every two years, the Prize recognizes outstanding young scientists whose work contributes to STEM research, education or international cooperation and supports sustainable development. Five laureates, representing UNESCO’s five geographical regions, are selected, with each receiving US$50,000, a medal and a diploma. Candidates must be under 40 years of age at the application deadline.

The deadline is 30 November 2026 (23:59 UTC+1).

InterPore Members can promote their publications to the community via the InterPore InJournals section of the Newsletter. If you wish to do so, please submit your publication highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Clearly indicate which of the authors is an InterPore member (or the institute with an Institutional Membership). Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online).
The highlight should be short (max. 100 words) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.

Crystal nucleation and growth reshapes pore networks, clogs channels, redirects fluid pathways, and alters the mechanical and transport behavior of rocks across length scales. How does confinement, interfacial free energies, and crystallization pressure govern where crystals form, how quickly they grow, and when they damage or seal flow networks in natural and engineered systems? Is machine learning and AI capable of linking molecular, pore, and field scale processes to advance predictive modeling of crystallization in porous media?

Dominik Burr, Stefan Rief, Konrad Steiner

The paper introduces a novel CFL-based timestep criterion that uses numerically computed velocity derivatives to adapt timestep sizes in immiscible two-phase flow simulations. The approach applies to both pressure-driven and capillary-dominated flows, requiring fewer timesteps than established methods while maintaining accuracy. Furthermore, it performs reliably for compressible fluid phases and heterogeneous porous media with discontinuous material parameters.
