InterPore News featuring: A new Edition of InterPore Journal is out!

Dear InterPore colleagues,

Earlier this week, I joined a webinar on ‘vibe coding’. Using generative AI to write computer programs. I already have some experience, and it is truly amazing what you can do. I think it is great outlet for creativity, as it merely takes just capturing your conceptual idea into words and genAI will make a R-, MATLAB-, C++-, Python-script accordingly, in any preferred language. A caveat: The lecturer also warned that when you grant your genAI tool too much access to files on your computer or gitlab, it will eventually end in trouble for your computer.

We are pleased to announce the publication of Issue 3/2026 of InterPore Journal. The new issue features six contributions, ranging from from crystal nucleation and growth, saline weathering, and flow at fluid–porous interfaces to multiphase flow, non-Fickian solute transport, and deep-learning approaches for reactive mineral dissolution.

The InterPore Elections 2026 are approaching, with voting taking place from 1-30 November 2026. The elections are an important opportunity for members to help shape the future leadership and direction of our Society. All current InterPore members are eligible to vote, and we encourage all members to take part in this year's election.

Prof. Lyesse Laloui, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, is the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer of 2026.

Since early 2026, he has been presenting lectures all over the world, both in-person and online.

Some of these venues include: Sharif University of Technology, Lebanese American University, Technical University of Vienna, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, University of Cyprus and Heriot-Watt University.

In September, he will lecture at Shell in the Netherlands (3 September); University of Bergen, Norway (7 September) and Technical University of Denmark (8 September).

Meet the InterPore Community: National Chapters are dynamic, country-wide groups within InterPore that bring together researchers, professionals, and students working in porous media science and engineering. These chapters act as local hubs for scientific exchange, collaboration, and networking, while contributing to the global mission of InterPore.

The Third Symposium of the West Africa InterPore Chapter will take place from 30-31 October 2026.

Pre-symposium courses for PhD students will be held on Thursday, 29 October 2026, covering Python, Machine Learning/Deep Learning, and Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs).

The next meeting of the Colombia InterPore Chapter will take place as part of DD30 from 6-11 December in Bogotá, Colombia.

The Colombia InterPore Chapter is being reactivated in 2026 with a new Steering Committee. We welcome researchers from all institutions across Colombia working in porous media and related fields. Please contact Colombia_Chapter@interpore.org to join.

Colombia Chapter Meeting

The 9th Brazil InterPore Chapter Conference on Porous Media was held in August at the Brazilian Center for Research in Physics (CBPF) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. CBPF provided an excellent setting for the conference, combining its scientific infrastructure with a privileged location in one of Rio de Janeiro's most iconic areas.

The 2026 edition attracted 249 registered participants, including 210 participants from Brazil and 39 from other countries. Participants from 13 countries were represented, while the Brazilian attendees came from 12 different states, demonstrating both the national reach and the growing international character of the meeting.

The scientific program comprised 133 presentations, including 24 invited lectures, 59 contributed oral presentations, and 50 poster presentations, making the 9th Brazil InterPore Chapter Conference one of the largest editions of the meeting to date.

News and information regarding InterPore's Honors & Awards, aiming to honor researchers at various stages of their careers, including students, young researchers, junior faculty, rising stars, world-renowned scientists, and pioneers. 

The first three recipients of the InterPore Journal Invited Student Paper Award from the InterPore2025 nominations have been confirmed! Congratulations to Mario Del Mastro, Nengi Fiona Karibi-Botoye, and Armin Damon Riess, whose outstanding conference presentations have successfully progressed to publication in InterPore Journal.

Mario’s paper is already available in the latest issue, with the other two papers coming in the next issue. Further recipients from the InterPore2025 nominations may be announced at a later date.

The former InterPore Medal for Porous Media Research has been given a name update: It is now the InterPore Distinguished Researcher Medal.

This award is given to scientists with an established career, in recognition of excellent research in general porous media, with emphasis on research conducted over the past 10 years.

Please note that the award itself and its purpose remain unchanged - only the name has been revised for greater clarity.

InterPore and Kimberly-Clark are excited to announce the launch of a new award: the InterPore–Kimberly-Clark Industrial PhD Research Fellowship (replaces the KC Distinguished Lecturer Award).

Here you can find updates to the Academy's events promoting education, training, and research through a variety of activities, including courses, webinars, thematic workshops, and initiatives by the Young Academy.

The next InterPore Academy webinar will take place on 15 September at 16:00 CEST with Bo Guo on the topic of “PFAS Transport in Unsaturated Porous Media Across Scales: Interfacial Partitioning, Thin Water Films, and Upscaling.”

Dr. Bo Guo is a University Distinguished Scholar and Associate Professor of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona. He studies fluid flow and transport in porous media, with an emphasis on multiscale mathematical and computational modeling. As the 2027 Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecturer, he will travel around the world next year to present his research at universities, research institutions, and industry organizations. Click here to request to host Bo’s 2027 Darcy Lecture.
