Dear InterPore colleagues,

Plenty of faces in today's Newsletter. Some familiar (to some) and some new (to some!). And, from the Council update the news that our InterPore Journal is already performing well. Clear signs that InterPore is firmly rooted in the porous media research community. After all, the Society is shrugging off its teenage years as it prepares for its 20th birthday. With most Society members being a little bit older than 20 years, InterPore skipped the idea of a “Project X party” and prepares the festivities well, and well in advance!

Furthermore, plenty of Chapter news, community news, jobs, etc!

Here you can find news and updates to the upcoming Annual Meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

The important dates for InterPore2027 have now been added to the conference website.

The next upcoming deadline is the Call for Minisymposia submission deadline on Friday, 14 August 2026. Members of the porous media community are invited to submit proposals for new minisymposia, suggest modifications to existing minisymposia topics, or propose minisymposia organizers.

Before submitting a proposal, please review the minisymposia included in the InterPore2026 program to avoid unnecessary overlap. Proposals that are closely related to existing minisymposia should clearly explain how the proposed topic differs from or expands upon the 2026 version. Submissions can be sent to conference2027@interpore.org.

Founded on 15 September 2008, InterPore will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2028. The InterPore Council has now established the Jubilee Committee to steer society-wide anniversary initiatives.

Key Initiatives:

  • Events: Organizing flagship celebrations at InterPore2028 and throughout the anniversary year.
  • Highlights: Selecting a Jubilee Conference Speaker and publishing a special edition of the InterPore Journal.
  • Engagement: Hosting a 20th Anniversary Logo Competition and releasing a custom commemorative gift for attendees.
  • Outreach: Leading all jubilee-related communications and media updates.

This overview reflects initial objectives and will evolve as the committee expands its agenda.

At the last meeting of the InterPore Council Committee, the promising growth of the InterPore Journal which already has a great Scopus CiteScore was highlighted. Furthermore, the InterPore Foundation awarded many Conference grants and there is news on a new InterPore - Kimberley-Clark PhD Research Fellowship.

We are pleased to welcome Nihal Mounir Darraj of Imperial College London, UK, as a new member of the InterPore Program Committee.

Representing the InterPore Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee, Nihal will help ensure that DEI perspectives are considered in developing the Annual Conference program, including the selection of the conference focus theme and potential plenary and invited speakers.

The InterPore Elections 2026 are approaching, with voting taking place from 1–30 November 2026. All current InterPore members are eligible to vote. The InterPore elections are an important opportunity for members to help shape the future leadership and direction of our Society. We encourage all eligible members to take part in this year's election.

If you plan to participate in this year's elections, now is a good time to visit your My InterPore page and ensure that your membership will be active throughout November 2026. If you have any questions about your membership status, please contact membership@interpore.org.

The six candidates for the three available positions on the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) have been selected and will be introduced soon.

Meet the InterPore Community: National Chapters are dynamic, country-wide groups within InterPore that bring together researchers, professionals, and students working in porous media science and engineering. These chapters act as local hubs for scientific exchange, collaboration, and networking, while contributing to the global mission of InterPore.

Registration is now open for the Israel Chapter Conference, taking place on 25–26 October 2026 as part of Israeli Science and Academia Week and the MIND-IL Initiative.

MIND-IL aims to connect Israeli researchers abroad with Israel’s academic, industrial, and innovation ecosystems, strengthening Israeli academia and fostering international collaboration. Israeli Science and Academia Week will feature more than 40 conferences across a wide range of disciplines.

The Israel Chapter particularly encourages students and researchers from Israel, as well as colleagues from abroad, to participate in the porous media conference and connect with the community.

Please share this opportunity with colleagues who may be interested in participating.

The InterPore China Chapter 2026 Annual Conference was held at Nanjing University’s Suzhou Campus from 14-17 July, bringing together over 300 experts from seven countries. The conference was organized by the Center for Sustainable Subsurface Energy and co-hosted by the School of Sustainable Energy and Resources at Nanjing University and InterPore China Chapter, delivering a vibrant program of 30 plenary lectures, four thematic sessions, and 65 poster presentations.

News and information regarding InterPore's Honors & Awards, aiming to honor researchers at various stages of their careers, including students, young researchers, junior faculty, rising stars, world-renowned scientists, and pioneers. 

InterPore is delighted to announce that Prof. Michael Celia (Theodora Shelton Pitney Professor of Environmental Studies, Emeritus Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Princeton University, USA), has been selected as the recipient of the InterPore Time Capsule Award 2026. Through his groundbreaking research, academic leadership, and commitment to advancing environmental engineering, he has made lasting contributions to science and society.

 The Time Capsule Award honors pioneers whose scientific achievements, leadership, and dedication, have made a lasting impact on the porous media community.  The Time Capsule perserves, not only the scientific contributions of distinguished researchers but also the personal stories, experiences, and insights that have shaped our field.

We congratulate Prof. Michael Celia on this well deserved recognition and look forward to sharing his Time Capsule Interview with the InterPore community in the near future.

News, events and activities from all around the porous media community

The ICTEA organizing committee is pleased to announce the First Symposium on AI with Applications in Engineering and Business to be held prior to the annual ICTEA conference in Batumi, Georgia. The symposium dates are 18-19 June 2027, and submission are now being accepted. Attendees of the symposium can participate and present for free at the ICTEA annual conference, also to be held in Batumi, 21-23 June 2027.

If you wish to do so, please submit your publication highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Clearly indicate which of the authors is an InterPore member (or the institute with an Institutional Membership). Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online).
The highlight should be short (max. 100 words) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.
