Dear InterPore colleagues,

While Europe (and probably more places) is away on or is preparing for holidays, we actually have a decently filled Newsletter. The first InterPore2026 deadline is already coming up, and we have an update on the InterPore elections. Courses, awards, webinars, new job opportunities… and with perhaps less stress from meetings or teaching, you may have an opportunity to find something to your liking below.

Meet the InterPore2027 Plenary Speakers

InterPore2027 will feature four plenary speakers whose work reflects the breadth of porous media research across mathematics, physics, engineering, materials science, and biological systems.

Together, these speakers bring perspectives spanning modeling, imaging, NMR, fluid mechanics, soft matter, subsurface systems, and bio-inspired porous media research.

Małgorzata Peszyńska of Oregon State University, USA, is an applied and computational mathematician whose work focuses on modeling flow and transport in porous media, with applications in environmental and subsurface systems.

Tito José Bonagamba of the University of São Paulo, Brazil, is a physicist specializing in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and its applications in porous media, materials science, quantum information, and instrumentation.

Márcio da Silveira Carvalho of PUC-Rio, Brazil, is a mechanical engineer whose research focuses on fluid mechanics, complex fluids, multiphase flow, and petroleum engineering applications.

Yoël Forterre of CNRS, France, is a soft matter physicist whose work explores granular materials, complex fluids, plant biomechanics, and the physical mechanisms behind plant movements.

The important dates for InterPore2027 have now been added to the conference website.

The next upcoming deadline is the Call for Minisymposia submission deadline on Friday, 14 August 2026. Members of the porous media community are invited to submit proposals for new minisymposia, suggest modifications to existing minisymposia topics, or propose minisymposia organizers.

Before submitting a proposal, please review the minisymposia included in the InterPore2026 program to avoid unnecessary overlap. Proposals that are closely related to existing minisymposia should clearly explain how the proposed topic differs from or expands upon the 2026 version. Submissions can be sent to conference2027@interpore.org.

The InterPore Elections 2026 are approaching, with voting taking place from 1–30 November 2026.

The Nomination Committee has now completed its work and identified candidates for:

  • President-Elect
  • Council (including at least three candidates representing industry)
  • Student Affairs Committee (SAC)

 The elections will be conducted by the Election Committee, which is responsible for ensuring a fair, transparent, and impartial election process.

InterPore is pleased to announce that Diletta Giuntini, has been appointed as a member of the Program Committee.

Diletta Giuntini is Assistant Professor in the Mechanics of Materials section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Her research focuses on the development of advanced ceramics and ceramic-based materials, with technologies spanning ultra-fast sintering techniques and additive manufacturing, combining experimental and modeling methods.

We warmly welcome Diletta to this position and look forward to working with her.

Prof. Lyesse Laloui, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, is the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer of 2026. After a short summer break, he will be back in September for a series of lectures all over Europe.

Meet the InterPore Community: National Chapters are dynamic, country-wide groups within InterPore that bring together researchers, professionals, and students working in porous media science and engineering. These chapters act as local hubs for scientific exchange, collaboration, and networking, while contributing to the global mission of InterPore.

The upcoming edition of the International Symposium on Wettability and Porous Media will take place in Amsterdam from 30 November to 2 December 2026. The event is hosted by TU Delft and will be jointly organised with the InterPore BeNeLux Meeting.

Abstract submission has been extended to 1 August.

News and information regarding InterPore's Honors & Awards, aiming to honor researchers at various stages of their careers, including students, young researchers, junior faculty, rising stars, world-renowned scientists, and pioneers. 

InterPore is delighted to announce that Prof. Dr. Linda Abriola from Brown University, USA, has been selected as the recipient of the InterPore Time Capsule Award 2026. The Time Capsule Award honors pioneers whose scientific achievements, leadership, and dedication, have made a lasting impact on the porous media community.  The Time Capsule preserves not only the scientific contributions of distinguished researchers but also the personal stories, experiences, and insights that have shaped our field. Through her groundbreaking research, academic leadership, and commitment to advancing environmental engineering, Prof. Abriola has made lasting contributions to science and society.

We congratulate Prof. Abriola on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to sharing her Time Capsule Interview with the InterPore community in the near future.

Prof. Jaime Gómez-Hernández, head of the Hydrogeology Group at IIAMA-UPV, has been awarded the "Custodio y Llamas" Award, presented by the Spanish Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (AIH-GE). The award recognizes his scientific career, his dedication to teaching, and his contributions to applied geostatistics, groundwater modeling, and the quantification of uncertainty in aquifers. InterPore congratulates Jaime on honor.

The Stockholm Water Prize recognizes outstanding contributions that improve the health and well-being of both people and ecosystems. The prize celebrates achievements across a broad range of disciplines.

Registration is now open for the second cohort of the ISC–INGSA Science Advice Training Programme, which aims to strengthen the capacity of scientists and scientific organizations to provide effective, evidence-informed advice to policy-makers, which will begin in early September 2026. The programme is open to researchers and affiliates from ISC Member organizations and provides valuable training for those interested in strengthening the role of science in policy and decision-making.

If you wish to do so, please submit your publication highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Clearly indicate which of the authors is an InterPore member (or the institute with an Institutional Membership). Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online).
The highlight should be short (max. 100 words) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.
