Mohad Nezhad's research focuses on the physics of heterogeneous porous materials and the development of efficient and robust numerical algorithms through the integration of Computational Statistics and Data Science. The aim is to reliably capture the hydro-chemo-mechanical behaviour of a wide range of heterogeneous materials that exhibit significant randomness. Her research seeks to investigate and understand the relationship between pore structure and macro-scale properties. To support this, her team also develops bespoke experimental systems designed to model and quantify the complex behaviour of these materials across scales from micro to macro, and to generate data for the validation of computational algorithms. This work is highly interdisciplinary and is driven by applications in the integrity assessment of safety-critical structures (e.g. nuclear energy and waste disposal systems, carbon capture and storage systems, and flood embankments), environmental risk analysis (e.g. surface and groundwater quality modelling), geotechnics (e.g. injection of geopolymer resin for ground improvement), and petroleum geomechanics (e.g. shale rock characterisation and hydraulic fracturing modelling).
