Diganta is motivated to develop smart porous media technologies supported by cutting-edge fabrication and digital technologies to address some of the most critical societal challenges: water security, material circularity, and personalised healthcare. The underlying connection in these concepts/technologies is that they leverage biological or non-biological materials, or a combination thereof, with interconnected void spaces (pores) and particles/fibres of different sizes and shapes to achieve specific engineering goals or functions. Therefore, his research vision is to integrate traditional porous media theories, process engineering, and system autonomy to develop innovative porous media technologies, enhancing their performance, reducing the need for constant human oversight, and enabling their adoption to solve the above societal challenges. Specific research expertise includes the following: Coupled Free and Porous Flow; Multi-Phase flow in Porous Media; Membrane-based Water Treatment; Transdermal Drug Delivery Devices (microneedles); Tissue Engineering
