Dear InterPore colleagues,

I had just a typical week for a porous media researcher. One day, I discussed techniques to prevent Legionella from reaching dangerous levels in showers in sports facilities, and the next, we discussed microplastic in surface water and its potential for being toxic. How efficiently can it be filtered? And yes, I also spent time thinking about a way to couple mass and thermal diffusion to convection and link a supersaturated zone to heterogeneous nucleation…

…and I also spent time making a wonderful Newsletter with a great variety of items. We’ve got a winner, InterPore2022 updates, an invitation, a report from the KC Distinguished Lecturer, a brand new Research Spotlight, science, jobs and more!

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

InterPore2022 Career Event

Many students and PhD candidates struggle with deciding which career path to follow after graduation. Whether to pursue an academic career or search for possibilities in industry or governmental agencies? What are the pros (and cons) of each career path? What does life after university feel like for young researchers? To help shed light on these big questions, the Students Affairs Committee (SAC) will organize its traditional “Career Event” during InterPore2022 in Abu Dhabi to hear from established professionals sharing their personal views and experiences.

In this session, we will NOT hear about their latest research or industrial achievements, but instead about their different career paths and the critical choices they had to make along the way. In addition, we will hear about the opportunities for Porous Media scientists in an era of the energy transition. Stay tuned for more updates from SAC Career Events.

On behalf of the InterPore2022 organizers, the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) invites you to join us for a music presentation. If you play an instrument, sing, or perhaps have a band, you are warmly welcome to share your abilities with the InterPore community. This is a spontaneous way to expand our professional and personal networks. The call to all our talented musicians is now open. Please send us an email to sac@interpore.org. We will be waiting for you. Let’s have an incredible broadcast!

InterPore2022 Sponsors

We are delighted to announce TESCAN as a Silver Sponsor and exhibitor at InterPore2022! TESCAN enables nanoscale investigation and analysis within the geosciences, materials science, life sciences and semiconductor industries. The company has a 30-year history of developing innovative electron microscopy, micro-computed tomography, and related software solutions for customers in research and industry worldwide. As a result, TESCAN has earned a leading position in micro nanotechnology. You can learn more about TESCAN Dynamic micro-CT solutions on their website and at their booth (both online and booth #4 in Abu Dhabi) at the upcoming conference.

Do you want your company name in our online communication? Please ask Amy Spang for more information or find our prospectus on our website.

KC Distinguished Lecturer report

This year’s Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lectureship Award Holder, Professor Jacques M. Huyghe from the University of Limerick (Ireland) and the Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands), gave the 12th talk in the framework of SFB 1313‘s lecture series “Pretty Porous Science Lectures” on 20 January 2022 at the University of Stuttgart. The title of the talk was “The heart: the only pump the failure of which cannot be assessed through stress analysis”. Over 50 interested researchers from the University of Stuttgart and international collaborators of SFB 1313 attended the hybrid lecture. We want to thank Prof. Huyghe for this very interesting talk and hope to welcome him in Stuttgart again.

Interested in hosting the KC Distinguished Lecturer at your institute? Please visit our website for more information.

Rien van Genuchten Early-Career Award

This year’s candidates who were nominated for the Rien van Genuchten Early-Career Award of Porous Media for a Green World were all very strong. They have done excellent work in porous media research contributing to a more sustainable environment/future. While all were extremely well deserving, the Sub-Committee evaluating the nominees decided to give the award to Dr. Siva Rama Satyam Bandaru, University of California, Berkeley, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He was praised for his work related to the development and implementation of Electro Chemical Arsenic Remediation (ECAR). This is a low-cost robust technology to clean polluted groundwater extracted for human consumption, with many applications worldwide but especially in rural South Asia.

Congratulations!

You are warmly invited to the first session of the “Porous Media Tea Time Talks” webinars in 2022, featuring two young porous media researchers from Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi (the Local Organizing Committee for the InterPore2022). #PorousMediaTTT’s session 30 will be streamed live on 15 February at 15:00 CET via our YouTube Channel.

Research Spotlight: LH2

The Department of Hydromechanics and Modelling of Hydrosystems (LH²) of the University of Stuttgart was founded in 2000 by Prof. Rainer Helmig. LH2 currently comprises around 30 international members of different research fields. Research at LH2 includes developing methods for coupling hydrosystem compartments and complex flow and transport processes as well as integrating data and hydrosystem models. Special emphasis is laid on describing single- and multi-phase flow and transport processes in the subsurface environment and in generic (engineered or natural) porous and fractured-porous media. The aim of the group is to ensure close interdisciplinary work between the fields of research, teaching and lifelong learning courses, as well as technology transfer in the engineering sector.

The full Research Spotlight can be found here.

The Research Spotlight series highlights the work of InterPore Members. Short scientific texts with illustrations give an overview of a sampling of the current projects or group contributions in various fields of porous media research. If your institution or organization is an InterPore Member, and you would like to contribute a Research Spotlight, please contact Stef Lantin.

A Probabilistic Formulation of the Diffusion Coefficient in Porous Media as Function of Porosity

Alraune Zech & Matthijs de Winter

Most porous materials are heterogeneous at microscales. Upon upscaling while ruling out additional heterogeneity at greater length scales, eventually a Representative Elementary Volume (REV) size is obtained for measuring porosity. In other words, the scatter in the measurements completely diminishes. We’ve applied a dedicated up-scaling strategy to study the same behavior for diffusive transport through porous materials and made two observations: 1) The convergence to a REV is slower for diffusive transport in comparison to porosity, and 2) the convergence towards a REV for diffusive transport approaches asymptotically a value greater than zero. It appears that the REV is never reached.
